    Starter Drive

I did the same thing, but I just put mine back together that way, no problem. Of course, my tractor was split so it was really easy to make sure the starter drive gear engaged the ring gear. It'll retract itself on the first start.

    Finally, snow

I used to live in Houghton County in the U.P. before I moved to Colorado, so I know what you mean. Winter was more consistent in the U.P., but here in the foothills outside Denver we can get some pretty big dumps at times. We can get 3' of snow one day and have it be sunny and 60 degrees the...

    How many brake/axle dis-reassemblies?

I did the same 180-trick with my brake plates last week! Luckily I caught it soon enough and it was no big deal to fix, the sealant hadn't set up yet. I think you can remove the hub/axle as a unit - I remember reading some posts from people who couldn't get the hub free of the axle without...

    ring gear in the oven

My flywheel was only "garage-cold" and the heat from that ring gear went into the mass of the flywheel rather quickly. When I felt it later the flywheel was warm to the touch but the ring gear felt room temperature. If I remember my college heat transfer courses they're actually the same...

    ring gear in the oven

Just got my new ring gear installed on the flywheel. I didn't do anything to cool the flywheel figuring it can't contract enough to make much difference. First I tried a 550 F oven for over an hour, no go... Then I ran the cleaning cycle for 30 minutes after figuring out how to jimmy the door...

snapped rear axle bearing retainer bolts

Forgot to mention, the rest of the bolts weren't super-tight by any means - I was able to remove them all with a 3/8" air ratchet (not impact wrench) without breaking them loose first. And "sheared" is probably the wrong word - looks more like the bolts heads popped straight off. Also, is...

snapped rear axle bearing retainer bolts

I'm redoing my rear axle seals on my 1948 8N again - first time was 2001, so it lasted 6 years (well, 4 years + 2 years of procrastination). When I removed the drums I found that one of the through bolts that connect the seal/bearing retainer etc to the axle housing had the heads snapped off -...
