    Thanks for all the comments! I'm new to the forum and mostly work on Farmall stuff so this JD is kicking my tail. Already had to weld the JD centers into a modern 28" wheels to go to 13.6-28's to get away from the 26's that were hard to find. Thanks for all the comments, they are very helpful.

    How did you solder the stud? I have a big iron, but I think this is gonna take a mini torch. I'm assuming silver solder to take the current of a starter?

    Yep, the direction I'm going. Gotta solder a stud in and it looks like it's gonna take a small torch and some silver solder to take the heat.

    It's a friends tractor, it was running till the points burned up. The starter spins fine, a little noisy, but okay for a 6v starter on a 12v system. I've seen this many times. The trouble is the contacts in the switch mounted on top of the starter. It smoke and blows chucks out of the contacts...

    Working on a '56 420 that has been converted to 12v with 12 volt GM alternator. It smokes the starter switches mounted on top of the starter. I've had the starter apart and it's not getting hot. Considering soldering a stud into the starter lug and going to a Ford solenoid or some other option...
