    Electronic ignition???

I have had good luck with points from small engines to dual point Mallory's. The points on the 8N were Echlin from Napa. The points didn't burn and open up. The block would wear and the points would close with ample lube on the block. I have better things to do than pulling the distributor to...

    Touch control is seized

If the control lever has no movement at all I believe the shaft is frozen in the quadrant. Here is the parts breakdown. If there is some movement in the shaft take the inspection cover off the right side and see if you can move the lever assembly on the other end that works the intake valve on...

    Electronic ignition???

I have a 48 8N that had points. My 8n would run good after new points or after setting the gap for about 10 hours and then the points needed gapped again. That may have been an easy fix for someone here but I did not post the question. I ended up replacing the points for EI. My only regret is...

    Dizzy Confusion

Foxtooth, I misspoke. The black wire goes to the ignition not the black/white.

    Dizzy Confusion

The Pertronix instructions for your module says you need at least .7 ohms of primary resistance. Your coil will have some resistance unless it has a dead short. How are you testing the existing coils resistance? Having too much resistance will not hurt the module but your spark will suffer. The...

    Dizzy Confusion

I converted my 6V positive ground to a Pertronix #1244AP6 6V positive ground with an external coil. The external coil I purchased had 1.5 Ohms of primary resistance. The system you purchased needs .7 Ohms of primary resistance. Measure the coil resistance as JMOR said. In your drawing you show...

    Dizzy Confusion

Have you bought this kit yet? Is the tractor 6V Positive ground? If you have not bought it yet and the tractor is 6V positive, upgrade the tractor to a 12V negative and buy a 12V negative EI. If you have bought it see if they will exchange it with a 12V negative. If you want to make the 6V...

8n with too much axel preload

Btzj02, thanks for answering my question about normal ware. With the axel ware as it is, are there other components that may have been damaged other than the bearing and retainer that I should check before I put it back together? I understand the endplay adjustment now.

8n with too much axel preload

Thanks Wore Out. I did not realize that the 2 axels butt together during normal operation. Since it is end play and not bearing preload I should be fine as long as there is .002 to .006 of end play. Axel shaft ware would only be a concern if end play was greater than .006 with all shims removed.

8n with too much axel preload

I have a 48 8n that has been in my family for 40 years. I am replacing the brakes and plan on fixing the oil leak into the brakes. I pulled the left axel from the shaft and posted pictures of the differential end of the axel. Does this look like normal ware or was there not enough shims...

Story of my ford 9n 8n hybrid (long read)

I use a metal inline filter. I was wondering if this restricted my fuel flow so I disconnected the fuel line at the carburetor and timed how long it took to fill a cup. It took 8 seconds so 1 pint would have taken 16 seconds.

8n air bubbles in hydraulic oil, weak hydraulics

The left hand valve chamber has a crack.

8n air bubbles in hydraulic oil, weak hydraulics

The hydraulics on my 1948 8n does not build enough pressure to lift an older, heavy bush hog on its own. If I assist it will raise the bush hog to the top of the cylinder travel. When I shut the tractor off with the bush hog lifted up it will stay in the air for over 2 days. The tractor has...

    8N - Governor With 3/4" Ball Bearings

That makes sense that it is likely an aftermarket governor. I noticed that in 1953 the governors used 6-3/4 inch balls.

    8N - Governor With 3/4" Ball Bearings

I bought a governor off eBay to replace a poorly made new governor that does not provide enough force to counter the spring on the linkage. This governor off eBay looks like an early 8N governor without the port for the proof meter except that it has 3/4 ball bearings instead of 5/8. I did not...
