    Rebuilt clutch

Put my 4020 together yesterday. Made my own clutch alignment tool. 6" length of 1/2" keystock with a 1/2" drive socket for 7/16" bolt head fits inside pilot bearing, then a 19mm 1/2" drive impact socket slid onto the keystock is almost perfect fit for clutch disc shaft. Could probably do it...

JD 4020 Power Shift double split

Got the clutch housing and clutch pack installed today. I put those two bolts back in behind the clutch pack since the holes are open into the the transmission case and should probably be plugged. I think a guy could split at transmission housing if those bolts were out. Can turn the output...

JD 4020 Power Shift double split

I see that reference to using an old spline coupler for installing the clutch pack is just to be able to turn the clutch pack input shaft while the clutch pack is lifted in place with a pipe over the input shaft. I should be able to make something up with a few pieces of keystock.

JD 4020 Power Shift double split

Ok, yes grease is all I am familiar with for this kind of task to hold o-rings in place. So, to get that clutch pack installed, I will be able to put it in with out need for an old spline shaft? If i do some wiggling and turning of input shaft from engine it will then slide in? Is...

JD 4020 Power Shift double split

Have the tractor apart so these questions are about putting it back together when the time comes. For the o-rings at the split, is there something a guy should use to glue them inplace to ensure they don't move when going back together. Yes, the dowels will keep alignment and so just some greas...

    JD 4020 Powershift idler gear

I did find that if I moved the shifter to be in line with the park slot that it stopped creeping. If I pulled it straight down from 1,2,3 etc then it would creep a little, a didn't even notice it at first. I drove the tractor around yard maybe 6 times and it's been in the shop since doing...

    JD 4020 Powershift idler gear

Yes, been thinking about it last night and will probably split it. Never split a tractor before but this looks not too bad. I have the time and if a PTO clutch is slipping then it is a single split to get back in to do that and wouldn't be so bad if I have the stands already made up. The...

    JD 4020 Powershift idler gear

Yeah, I see it now. Had to go look at tractor again, that parts manual breakdown doesn't make things very clear and showing two pinion shafts on same drawing with no additional notes didn't help. There is a drawing specific to the power shift transmission pinion drive shaft. Power comes out...

    JD 4020 Powershift idler gear

Appreciate that information, now I can better understand it. I didn't notice the second pinion shaft on the ring gear. So essentially this idler gear spins a second shaft to also drive the ring gear and so reduces the torque on what I would consider the main pinion shaft (the shaft direct from...

    JD 4020 Powershift idler gear

That bolt is part of the shift collar mechanism used to disengage the drive train for towing. I beleive it is a stop bolt to limit the throw of the disconnect. I will likely take it apart next winter. It got 15 miles on it last month and may not get more than 30 miles on it in the next 10...

    JD 4020 Powershift idler gear

I can't see in the limited space available, mirror won't fit and can't get good angle with bore camera. All I know is the balls are out and I found at least one ball broke into pieces so I imagine that ball got into the gear teeth and is what wrecked those teeth and split the ball. I don't...

    JD 4020 Powershift idler gear

Wondering what the significance is of this idler gear/shaft on the output of transmission planetary. Brought home a 1966 model, drained hydraulic oil and a couple bearing balls fell out. Found the ball bearing on front of idler shaft is the source and the idler gear has a couple teeth damaged...
