    Ford 860 electrical system

I have a 3 post solenoid with the small wire going to the starter button by the gear shifter. I thought my solenoid was stuck because when I hooked up the positive side to the battery, it starts cranking the starter. This is even without the starter button hooked up. But the multimeter shows...

    Why India didn't work out

So the plan was to buy a pair of tires (hopefully cheap) in India and bring them home on the carrier. This is why that plan fell apart: 1) We had no supplies shipped out to the carrier, so I'd have to hire my own boat with a crane on it to get them out here. (which would have negated any...

    Mulch bucket

Moving piles of used bedding from around the barn is a real PITA with a loader since it's hard to scoop up light material cleanly. I'm considering a set of forks that bolt onto the bucket, but, in the past, have had bad luck with a bolt-on bale spear that resulted in a bent bucket. I have a...

    Should I trade ?

I'm real satisfied with my Kubota M5040DT, but the service dept at the (1 hr away) dealership is not reliable: I've been waiting since August for the 100 hr. checkup and after 4 "reminders", they still haven't gotten around to me. My big fear is a tractor breakdown while haying. The local Deere...

    Messy Ferguson Haying

The last field I did, the grass was actually quite long & dense. Yesterday, someone who's used one of these balers for a long time, told me NOT to zigzag because the pickup is so narrow that it will be evened out by itself. Maybe I was just pushing too much grass away from the pickup while...

    Messy Ferguson Haying

Decided to go round and got a MF 1734 (= Hesston 530 3x4). It makes great bales - tight and well formed. However, when I'm done, there's lots of grass left on the ground which should have been baled. My windrows are tall, narrow and clean and the grass is dry. I set the pickup to the lowest...

    Hay

I've had grass on the ground for a week due to intermittent rain and short days, but teddered it a lot. The first good dry, sunny day, I waited until mid afternoon, raked and baled. I'm sure it wasn't very nutritious, but it was dry enough to store and it didn't get moldy.

    Rotary rake technique

Got a Kuhn rotary rake (great dealership nearby). Raking out was no problem as it made beautifully formed, fluffy windrows. However, when I went the other way to flip the rows in and merge some of the smaller ones, the results weren't so pretty: like it was teddered. Basically had to rerake it...

    What kind of damage

Took delivery of a Kuhn GMD500 which the dealer's trucker attached and checked out (or so he said). It mows beautifully; however, I noticed while working that I was unable to lift the unit more than an inch or so with the 3pt. While detaching it I found I wasn't able to remove the PTO shaft...

    Baler choice

The Hesston 530 / MF 1734 is supposed to run fine with a 35HP tractor. Used ones are hard to find (I'm on a waiting list with 4 guys ahead of me). A new 1734 is around $13K. Unlike JD or NH, the resale value in a few years would be a fraction of this.
