Thank you all for your information and advice. It looks like there are several options, but after considering them all, I bit the bullet and ordered one from this site.

Need advice on 12V conversion alternator

When I bought my 640 fifteen years ago, it had already been converted to 12V with a one wire alternator. Now, the alternator is making a squealing sound, and it sounds like its coming from the bearing when I listen to it with a stethoscope. I can't find anything on the alternator to identify...

HELP: need a ford 600 governor to carb clevis

That is the rod, but what I need is the clevis that the rod threads into. I've already ordered a rod.

HELP: need a ford 600 governor to carb clevis

Trying to remove the broken rod, I've totally mutilated the clevis that holds the governor to carb throttle rod.. No problem finding the rod, but I'm not finding a source for the clevis. I can make one but would rather keep the tractor original or close. Does anyone know of a source for the...

    Another question about a coil--Ford 640 with 12v convers

Thank you for the quick response. If I use the coil that you recommend, do I remove the ballast resister that is now inline from ignition to coil?

    Another question about a coil--Ford 640 with 12v convers

I want to get a new coil for my tractor, and the more I read about what I need the more confused I get. Can somebody help me? I have a Ford 640 that has been converted to a 12v and with the electronic ignition (no points/coil). There is also a ballast resister in line to the coil. I want...

    Question about Ford 640 brakes

Thanks for the reply. I figured there was no way to check the brakes other than to pull the wheel/tire, but there are a lot of experienced people on this forum. You never know but what somebody has figured out an easier way.

    Question about Ford 640 brakes

Is there any way to check the brake shoes on a ford 640 without pulling the wheels and tires? I've owned the tractor for ten years but have never been into the brakes. They are stopping okay, no grinding or metal-on-metal sound, but there is a squeak from the right side. I don't mind doing...

    Need help. Stumped.

Good idea, Royce. I'll do it. I have a universal ignition switch already that will save me the cost of a new relay. I don't know why the person wired it with the relay controlling power to the power distribution block because there is a second relay that controls all lighting. It just seems...

    Need help. Stumped.

Thank you for your reply and helpful suggestion, but the problem has been worked out, and I am embarrassed that I didn't look into it deeper before asking for help. At the moment, though, I was totally stumped. As I said when I wrote, I had checked the ignition switch, and it worked. But...

    Need help. Stumped.

This morning, away from the house, my trusty 640, with 12v conversion, suddenly wouldn't start. Cranks, but sounds like no fire. I had a roll of wire with me, so I tried hot-wiring it from the B+ to the coil. It started immediately. Got it to the barn. Disconnected the jumper wire from...

    Another question about plug color

I'm using Autolite 437's. This is the same plug that I have been using for years.

    Another question about plug color

I've always thought that on these older engines, there should be some color on the plugs, light tan being best (I have a Ford 640, 1955). Recently, after doing both carb and ignition work, I put in new plugs. These have now been run several hours. I pulled them today to take a look, and they...
