    JD loose drive disc

Do you mean that you welded up the splines on the end of the crank and then re-cut them?

Do you have a contact for the undersized hub?

    JD loose drive disc

Sorry I missed your question. My Drive disc had been running loose on the crank splines and was so loose that it would slid further onto the crank shaft. I first made a shim to take up the clearance and hold the disc tight on the shaft. I found out that with the disc in this position, with...

Valve Timing check, 1948 JD A

At the time, I assumed the crank to cam gears were correct but I needed the governor's mag slot to be horizontal - and it wasn't. So I lifted the governor just enough to disengage it from the cam gear, and move the slot where I wanted it.

I don't have a John Deere parts book on this A and my I&T manual doesn't show a shim... Thanks for the picture Rustred. That new disc looks like it has a lot of stand-off. My splines must be worn pretty badly....

I'll try shimming. Thank you all for your input and advice.

But since the spline shaft is tapered, I am thinking if I can secure it with enough pressure it'll work. This tractor won't get that many more hours on it once I get it running. The disc doesn't "wiggle" any when you push it all the way on. I'll just have to check the retaining bolt for...

The drive disc is on the splines too far for the washer to contact it.

It's not past the splines, just further up on them by 0.070" before it gets tight.

Looking at the clutch on my 1948 JD A. Washed everything off on the engine side and hand lubed the toggle bolts and roller bearing. Going back with the drive disc (item number 7 in my I&T manual) I've found that the retaining washer is not contacting the disc. There's ~0.070" clearance/play...

Valve Timing check, 1948 JD A

Since I had to "retime" the governor to cam gears, it made me suspect of the cam to crank timing. When my dad-in-law first got this tractor it shook like crazy when the engine was running. Whomever worked on it before my dad-in-law had put the clutch back wrong. Made me question the...

Valve Timing check, 1948 JD A

Where was the LH crank throw when your marks were together? TDC or somewhere else? I checked my LH exhaust valve lash and it was good. I turned past TDC until I couldn't spin the exhaust push rod anymore. The LH Exhaust open mark was ~1/2" past the mark on the side of the tractor. (According...
