    Two Brass "Plugs"

Hmm, thought I had posted this before. Working through the black smoke problem somewhat step by step. Removed and cleaned air filter and looked for leaks from carburetor. Nothing significant found. "Steel wool" rather gunked up near bottom so will replace all. Disassembled carburetor in...

    Black smoke and spark plugs

    Great! That's what I've been doing. . . .

    Black smoke and spark plugs

OK, so I have carburetor kit and air cleaner "packing" on order. Here's a really stupid question: Should the inner circle in the bottom of the air cleaner be filled with oil or just the outside "donut"? The fill line is just about at the same level as the hole in the inner partition. It...

    Black smoke and spark plugs

Jim, that's a good thought -- check that choke is opening. That could explain why it starts easily but soon runs poorly. . . . Thanks.

    Black smoke and spark plugs

Harry and Den, Thanks for suggestions. That's about where we were with this -- too rich. Probably a good time for a carburetor rebuild anyway. Just changed crankcase oil a month or so ago and refreshed oil filter, but have not looked into carb with intake pipe removed.

    Black smoke and spark plugs

I'm sure this topic is not "new" but no prior postings found with search! 1949 8N had been starting easily and running well, but began to run a bit rough. BIL suggested a little Seafoam in the gas (4 oz in 6-8 gallons in tank -- not pointing fingers, just stating fact :? No improvement...

    Fun with Front Mount Distributors

Hmm, thought I had replied to [b:8d3a4036c4]Royse[/b:8d3a4036c4], but it must have gotten caught in the ether somewhere. I'll try to recall. It was something like: The Wife actually suggested that I get the new 12V coil and then I could use the old one as a spare if it checked out OK. She...

    Fun with Front Mount Distributors

The Wife actually suggested that I get the 12V coil while we were at Just 8Ns -- I would then have a spare, if I could get it tested. She thinks I like to collect parts and don't throw anything away. Maybe she's right; I don't have a square inch in the workshop to do any work since it's filled...

    Fun with Front Mount Distributors

Got to nnalert's today -- even took The Wife! Went whole hog and got a rebuilt distributor AND 12V coil; then stopped by the Flying Pig for BBQ. Installed the distributor with coil plus spark plugs from the TSC tune-up kit. Started fine and ran as well as it has (or better) over the...

    Fun with Front Mount Distributors

[b:cf0103f2f2]Dell[/b:cf0103f2f2], I always enjoy your responses -- to my problems or to others. I don't intend to worry too much about dwell, and it's not the first time. In 1976, I bought a brand new F-100, six cylinder, standard shift, long-bed pickup -- had to pay extra to get a rear...

    Fun with Front Mount Distributors

Yep, cam is turning. I was using the tabs at the camshaft (bottom) end of the distributor shaft to turn while looking for points opening and closing. Even thought my eyes might be playing tricks on me, so turned the shaft while holding onto the cam to FEEL the lobes -- they were there and...

    Fun with Front Mount Distributors

Yep, greywolf, I agree -- good advice. Since nnalert is just across the state line from me (and I've done business with them a few times in the past), I'll probably plan a short road trip soon! The tractor was running fine before I left the key on (to run the gas out after turning off at the...

    Fun with Front Mount Distributors

Some of my issues may have been answered in the response to Tom888fish by Bruce, but I might have two questions left: 1. IF I replace the distributor (1949 8N front mount, 12V conversion that has been running), should I go with rebuilt, new, John Smith, .. . ? Looks like $160 at shops like...

    New Fan Belt?

Hello [b:dfe498b11d]Tall[/b:dfe498b11d], "Assuming" might not be quite the right word -- "hoping" might have been more like it. However, it sure looked pretty straight the first time, and this last time I put a straight edge across the fan pulley and "imagined" that there was about 1/8"...

    New Fan Belt?

Well, [b:8571e02ee0]Royse[/b:8571e02ee0], it just can't be that easy. . . can it? This second alternator quit rotating and the belt REALLY squealed and got hot. Took alternator off to find that the alternator fan was tight against front of casing and would NOT turn. Took alternator back to...
