Ford 9N points and time keep changing

Check the bushing in the nose of the distributor. There may be cracks in the support or on the base legs, which would allow it to move.

    Easy starting 8n ain't

Check the coil leads. The + side should go to the distributor on a positive ground system. Point gap should be .025 on a side mount distributor, .015 on front mounts. Check the point gap at several locations to be sure the shaft is not bent or the bushings worn out.

    Clutch not wanting to disengage

Check the linkage arms for cracks before you split the tractor. It could also be a cracked throw out bearing fork.

Ed S in Il or other hay cutters

We have used a Dearborn 6 ft sickle mower behind our 9N but it is a pain to mount and plugs up often if the field is damp. Now we pull a 7ft NH 467 mower/conditioner with an 801 Ford tractor. We use a New Idea wheel rake pulled by the 9N or a pickup truck. The 9N runs our Case 200 square baler...

9N steering can jump out of time if they hit something hard. Sort of a safety device to protect the gear. Remove both tie rods from the front spindles. Move the left sector arm completely to the rear, and the right arm completely to the front. Gradually lower both arms untill they engage the...

OT- Ford Type A ATF vs Type F

Any old transmission experts out there?? I'm helping a friend with a 54 Mercury. Merc-o-matics called for type A fluid at least till the mid 1960's. Is this compatible with Type F or is it necessary to find some type A fluid?
