OT- Ford Type A ATF vs Type F

Any old transmission experts out there?? I'm helping a friend with a 54 Mercury. Merc-o-matics called for type A fluid at least till the mid 1960's. Is this compatible with Type F or is it necessary to find some type A fluid?

Type F ATF has friction modifiers that cause the clutches to engage more firmly. As far as I know, Type A and Type F have about the same viscosity, lubricating properties and cooling capacity.

The owner's manual of the car will call out the proper fluid.

Some drag racers use Type F in transmissions that call out Type A in order to get the firmer shifts.

Theirs some good info in the replies to yer post,,, my guru say's use dextron 3/mercron R...

I get a long draw out history lesson when ever I ask,,, so he moves on to Allison's trans,,, say's he runs 10 Wt. motor oil in'em,,, also one of his guys mistakenly put motor oil in a Chrysler 727 in a motor home that he rebuilt the trans in,,, the mistake was not found till a few K were put on the motor home,,,, drained and refiled with know problem....
