    6 volt starter with a 12 volt battery.

    I had the same issue with the 6 volt Delco starter on my 12 volt-converted IH350. An shop confirmed that this was hard on the starter mechnical parts and advised replacing the 6 volt field windings with 12 volt windings. The cost to replace them wasn't that much.
