    51 8n

This tractor was my Dads. He died five years ago. The tractor was running before he got ill. However, it has been sitting outside under a tarp since. #1 n 4 had compression over 75lbs. 2 n 3 had below 25lbs. One suggestion was to soak the cyls with ATF to loosen rings. I did so and the comp on 2...

    51 8n

Well as an update on Dad's tractor. I had no luck on improving comp. on 2 n 3 using ATF after two week of soaking so I pulled the head. Head gasket looks ok not blown and all of the valves are opening and closing. So now I guess a ring job is in order. My question would be to do a complete in...

    Engine overhaul

Well after trying to improve my compression using a good soaking of ATF I still have very low pressure on 2 n 3 so I guess a overhaul is next. I want to sell this tractor but realize having it running is my best bet. I am looking for recommendations on which kit to buy and any other rebuild...

    '51 8n

Ok, I guess I'm ready to be taken to the wood shed again. But I'm just sayin. Here's what I've done to Dad's tractor that has been sitting. Pulled the carb down twice and cleaned very well. Repalced plugs, wires, coil, condensor, cap and rotor cleaned and set points. Checked timing mark (both...

    Compression Test

Cool guys I'm on it now. Thanks!

    Timing

Ok guys thanks, I have located the flywheel numbers and discovered that I am indeed 180 out on my firing order at 0* on the flywheel. Still don't know how my dumb self did that but anyway. So am I understanding you to say that I need to be on the 4* mark on the flywheel at the number 1 firing...

    Compression Test

After many "deserved" trips to the wood shed about checking the comp on my '51 I took the hood back off and did one. As a refresher this little tractor has been in the barn for four years just sitting. I have done the ing parts replacements and I'm getting good fire. The results of the test...

    Timing

On the '51 8n where are the timing marks located, on the crank pully shaft or somewhere else. Should the dist be set any degrees before #1 TDC?

    She still didnt start

I did a shadetree compression test using my thumb while verifing the TDC for cylinder 1 when I was getting the firing order and making sure the cap and wires were correct. I had pressure on all cylinders then but will have to get a gauge and do a true test. Should I be looking for at least 90psi...

    She still didnt start

Well this was my Dad's tractor and has been in the barn since he passed four years ago. I brought it home to get it running. It started briefly with starting fluid before I did anything. Since the gas was vanished I cleaned the tank, rebuilt the carb, replaced the plugs, cap, condensor, rotor...

    She still didnt start

The '51 8n is still not starting. I have repalced the cap and rotor button, verified the firing order, made sure I have fire to all of the plugs and cleaned them (the plugs are new). I have gas to the carb and the breather tube disconnected from the canister so I can apply starter fluid for...

    Carb Backfire

I have identified the order, checked the compression by "thumb" method and stiil backfires. I am now wondering if I am only getting inconsistant fire perhaps due to coil issues. The points just don"t seem to being firing consistantly? The thing is that she ran briefly on starting fluid the very...

    Carb Backfire

The '51 8n is backfiring thru the carb. I have replaced dist. cap, plugs, condinsor, wires and set the points at .025. It is a side mount dist and converted to 12v. I was careful to replace the wires and cap to maintain the proper order. earlier I read that the firing order was 1243 with the...

    Backfires

Ok cool on the cylinder numbers... I'll double check but I have not changed the wires or distrbutor so hopefully I have not messed that up..

    Backfires

Sorry, I have the same problem according to my wife about details. This is the 8N daddy left me. It has been setting up since his passing four yars ago. I have rebuilt the carb and cleaned the fuel tank. Replaced the plugs but not the cap and points. I am getting fire to all of the plugs and...
