    engine coolant

Has anyone ever used the newer "pink/orange" colored, "extended life" engine coolant in their 'N'? Would there be any ill ramifications such as incompatibility with internal engine parts to using it? Thanks in advance. Dave (NE OH)

    OT: recognize this tractor?

Here in NE Ohio (Lorain County) there is a steam engine club that puts on a show every year mid Sept. Main attraction is the buzz saw, thresher, baling demo's and the HP meter. I think for the most part the steam tractors here are more for show than anything. And even though it's the same...

Probly gonna part out the 9N - comment on what parts are in

I"m in SW suburb of Cleveland and would be interested in doglegs and grill if you really are planning to part her out. Is the stearing column and dash one cast aluminum piece or 2 piece steel?

Opinions on parting out an old 9N

looking to part out a 9N with blown motor - using some parts to fix up another 'working' tractor and don't want to really just sell leftovers to scraper. Block and oil pan shot &will be sold for scrp but many other good parts available. Do I try my luck w/ebay or list in classifieds on this...

    ATF ?

a while back someone posted about test done on penetrating oils and how a mix of ATF and Acetone was the best. Also recall seeing posts on using ATF to free siezed engines by filling frozen cylinder and letting sit until all ATF had drained thru. I posed this info to a mechanic friend of...

    brush-hog drive shaft

Thanks for the input guys - just thought I could save myself the added trip to the store before hand. @ Bob as stated no name/numbers anywhere, going to do as others suggested and take yoke to store and match. Thanks again all.

    brush-hog drive shaft

new to me "40 9N with ORC 1-1/8" female to 1-3/8" male - and had a brush-hog w/1-1/8" drive shaft that fit older 9N w/o ORC - looked at TSC for shaft adapter which will add another 4-6" to the PTO ( not the best solution) so I was wonder if I just replace the spline end of the u-joint all would...

oil breather cap 'foaming at the mouth'

Trac - you say condensation...that makes sense. Seeing as i did notice that the coolant is flowing right from start-up, suspect that means there is no thermostat in the top hose, which means the engine is not warming up correctly to burn off water in oil. Will have to wait to get into tearing...

oil breather cap 'foaming at the mouth'

a little over a month new to me - '40 9N, front dist, 12v conv Was taking advantage of semi nice weather (above 20*) doing a little PM/cleaning/tightening up the tractor. When I pulled the oil fill/breather cap to check filter it was full of an oily tan congealed froth. What is it or what is...

    flat front tire

Help! - front tire went flat overnight and their calling for more snow! - My question(s), does it have a tube? Parts list says so but not sure. Minimal weather checking and monies won't support new tire. Is there a tube available for a Std issue 3-rib 4x19 tire?

    snow time like the present

She has a make-shift grill, piece of expanded metal with a brace or two, really can"t see in pics. A real grill is in future, when money allows and I can convince the wife. But first she has mechanical issues that need tending too, nothing major so far just need done to keep her going strong...

    snow time like the present

new to me "40 9N (s/n:9N35753) having fun playing in the snow. 1st pic of tractor is from last week when I plowed the night before we got the 1" of freezing rain. Have gravel drive so keep blade up an 1" or so. Do that so I won"t have to pull to much of the drive out of the lawn come spring...

    Head bolts on 8N

Caution with the grade 8"s - over torque them and the heads are likely to pop-off. grade 8"s are designed for shear applications not tension, Grade 5 may be your better choice given the thermal expansion of the engine block. Grade 5 will stretch/relax with thermal expansion.

Old farmer adage or just full of it

It's tinfoil not the OEM asbestos cover. I knew it was possible with a fuel pump but never heard of it happening to a gravity fed system like on the 9N. So if I take it off (which most of is following off anyway) shouldn't make a difference. I also suspect with the 20* and lower temps right...
