    Governor help

I haven't had the governor off the tractor, we're using it to rake hay at the moment and I don't have a gasket/seal set to get it apart and back together. I suspect the thrust bearing is probably well worn but I won't know until I have a good look at it. The spring has a considerable...

    Governor help

Ok, I got it up to 1600 rpm by zip tying three coils of the spring together. I set the timing at 20 degrees at 1600, which should equate to 22 deg at 1750. Who sells governor parts? Need a spring and will probably do the bearing too so I'll do gaskets and seals while I'm at it.

    Governor help

I've set up my 88 in accordance with the manual but have run out of adjustment on the governor control lever side and still only have 1480rpm no-load (measured with digital laser tachometer). I'm assuming that my governor is worn/springs are fatigued/weakened. Thoughts and advice welcome...

    Oliver 88 fine tuning

I've got my 88 up and running. Work to date: Carb rebuilt. Throttle shaft had about 60 thou play in the carb body so my cousin and I reamed out the body and built an oversize shaft from brass stock (if I'm totally honest, Jordan built it, I watched). Re-assembled with a complete rebuild...

Marvel-Schebler carb problem - advice needed

I've just pulled the carb on my 88 today with the intent of a full strip, clean and rebuild with a full carb kit. I discovered the primary source of the running problems with my tractor. The throttle shaft is worn oval and rattles around in the bushing. This thing's got a serious air leak...

    Identify my Oliver 88

Gents, It seems I have the double disc style brakes with the actuating lever that points back toward the final drive/axle casing. Here are a series of photos of the beast: Bent seat frame: Corroded rear wheel: Good rear wheel: Dash...

    Identify my Oliver 88

I picked up my 88 Standard yesterday. It starts like a charm, idles really nicely but a bit rich. The rear tyres are as old as the hills and falling apart so I need to find a decent set of 16.9/14R30 tyres. One valve stem has been leaking and corroding the wheel so I need to find a...

    Zenith vs Marvel Schebler

I have to do some work on the old girl as I'm only getting about 1/2 throttle at the moment and the plugs are a bit wet so she's too rich. The carb looks like it hasn't been touched in 30 years so I think it's worth a clean-up and tune. While I'm at it, I figured I'd rebuild it with new...

    Zenith vs Marvel Schebler

OK fellas, here's the deal. There is nothing really wrong with my carb at present and I have no gasket leaks. The tractor starts with only a slight puff of unburned fuel with the choke on and, once warm, idles well but a bit rich. I only wanted feedback on whether I should re-build and...

    Oliver 88 tune-up

That's what I was hoping someone would say. I loved the one in my Land Rover, but each application is different. What coil did you use? What plug gap are you using?

    Oliver 88 tune-up

Gents, If an Oliver 88 needs a tune up (ignition tune and carb rebuild), what do you suggest? Ignition - I put Pertronix electronic ignition in my '69 Land Rover and had really good results. The make a unit for the Delco distributers so it's a quick bolt in option (both 6V +ve and 12V...

    Oliver 88 buying advice

Johns, As for hay equipment, we run a John Deere 900 series centre-pivot mower conditioner and a matching round baler that we set up to produce about 1600lb bales. Until I find something more suited to it, I think I'll let the little Oliver pull the hay rake and power our 8" PTO grain...
