What's That Noise? Farmall Super A

Well here is my replacement for the Super A. For all the parts it would need I felt like it was worth buying something else. I have since parted out the Super A and have used many parts off it. Replacing it is a 1961 Farmall 140.

    Dealer Stickers

I know there are several styles of IH dealer decals, most commonly the white, yellow, and blue style. Has anyone seen this style? Id like to identify this style. This is an original sticker on a Farmall 140 I just bought. It says International Harvester across the top. I can't read the...

What's That Noise? Farmall Super A

The plate on the clutch driveshaft coupler which everything bolts through has slop in it and all the holes are shined up. Also the rubber pieces in the joint are as hard as concrete. I think this is where the noise was coming from. As to the ring gear, it actually looks fine. I didn't take...

What's That Noise? Farmall Super A

Yes the countershaft or pinion is the issue. Missing several teeth and the threads are torn out of the shaft. No damage to the differential. I tried to post a picture of it but, was unsuccessful.

What's That Noise? Farmall Super A

I have it all apart now. Oddly I only found two chunks in the case. It did have some piles of metal shaving goop in the corners though.

What's That Noise? Farmall Super A

Found the main issue I believe. The bolt backed out of the countershaft and the pinion has some chipped teeth. The weird thing is the threads are gone in the first half of the shaft and are worn off the bolt too. It also ate in to the cap. I made it this far but, need to finish taking things...

What's That Noise? Farmall Super A

Making some progress. Decided to split it and remove the torque tube to get to the driveshaft coupler. Rear main seal is leaking pretty good too. Also appears the front seal on the transmission is leaking as well. I pulled the touch control because that’s the main reason I was going to work...

What's That Noise? Farmall Super A

Ok guys, thanks for the help and suggestions. I drained the oil and it really didn't look that bad. It was 85W-140 which may be why it looked funny. I had changed this oil 4 years ago, and the tractor has been in a heated building ever since. I did roll all the gears over and saw no damage...

What's That Noise? Farmall Super A

On my 1948 Farmall Super A I just started having an issue with something in the transmission or possibly with the clutch. I hauled it home to do some work on the touch control unit and when I drove it off the trailer it started making this loud knocking noise. If I push in on the clutch pedal...

    Trailer recommendation

Thanks! I bought the trailer from Fayette Trailers. The people at Best Choice seemed hit or miss however they have a lot of trailers to look at. I also looked at Big Tex but, thought this would suit me better.

    Trailer recommendation

I'm not 100% sure yet. It is advertised to weigh 4540 lbs. however the vin sticker says it weighs 5400 I think. I don't think it weighs that much. Ill have to weigh it at some point.

    Trailer recommendation

I just bought a PJ 25+5 on Friday. This is my second PJ trailer. A lot of people talk about the powder coat but, I never had a problem. This trailer is replacing my 2012 which is still in good shape. I do wash the trailer regularly and don't use it in the salt. PJ now uses a primer under...

    IH McCormick W6 Tie Rod

These are all good ideas. I took the tie rod off the tractor for now, and gave it to my Uncle who is a machinist. He is going to bore it out and add a bushing, then rethread it. All the wear is in the female threads.

    IH McCormick W6 Tie Rod

On my W6 the toe in adjustment is off quite a bit. The tie rod end (clevis IH calls it) threads are worn out. I can't get it to stay tight as the threads are worn out of 3/4 of the end from being run loose I believe. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this or where I can find another...

    Changing Farmall M Transmission Oil

I call that old oil "cake batter". When you get it flushed out I would use 80w90 as others have said or mineral oil if you can find it. I have mineral oil in my M. If you use hy-tran in my opinion your going to find out alot of your seals leak. Chances are that water leaked in around the...
