    An odd one .

Left hand threads were commonly used in Britain until recently. Quite often, adjusters and adjustment screws would be mixed left and right hand threads so motion of adjustment was consistent. In the early days of manufacturing, thread systems were not standardized. Each manufacturer used their...

    Magnetic Compass

There used to be a company that made compasses called the Tates Manufacturing Company. They weren't very accurate though, and some would say He who has a Tates is lost. unc

    UTS plugs help needed

I've run into this before- some plugs reguire a 1" socket. Lathe turn or grind the outside diameter down until it will easily go down the hole and onto the plug. Same if it's a 7/8" plug. Have patience, it will work. My favourite U model has two different cylinder heads- identical valve and...

    Redneck engineering

Morning Geo- I bought a Swisher sixty inch finish mower probably fifteen years ago. It has it's own B&S engine (14 HP if I remember), and has a floating four wheel carriage. I pull it with a Minneapolis ZTU row crop. I have no idea how many acres it has cut, but I've always been happy with it...

    What is it tool

The oakum was in the form of a rope. It's also used to caulk the seems on wooden boats. The oakum would be packed into the seam, then molten lead poured over top to complete the joint. Horizontal joints could be done with a clamp-on dam, or a clay-asbestos putty, known colloquially as "Bear...

    What is it tool

Hard to tell from here, but could be a tool for packing the oakum into cast iron pipe flanges when they're over your head. The lead is poured on over the oakum. unc

    american motors corp.

My Dad travelled for work, and bought a new car every year. From 1965 to 1978, he drove AMC vehicles. Classics, Ambassadors, Americans, Pacers, Matadors and Hornets. He particularly liked the upholstery and cabin appointments. The 1968 Ambassador came with no cost factory air conditioning. The...

    Drilling Concrete

Carbide masonry bits can be sharpened like a normal twist drill. The trick is to use a silicon carbide ("green wheel") grinding wheel, rather than the usual aluminum oxide wheel. They will cut like new and last much longer. unc

    zts speed

I have a ZTU frankentractor with 11.2X38 rear tires. I can't give an exact speed, but I believe fifth gear is about 13 MPH. It's exciting with a narrow front. unc

Single stack cold manifold for a D

If I remember correctly, the Robin components were cast, finished, and sold by Robinson Machine in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. They made manifolds and carbs for both McCormick-Deering and John Deere tractors. There have been references to their products in the Canada...
