John Deere B Steering bearing race removal?

Bob, When I did my steering shaft bearings on a 48A I did not trust my welding skill enough for the bearing deep in that center casting. So i used a small dremel disk and cut a slot in the race. Even before the slot was all the way through the race, the pressed in fit stress was relieved...

JD A no Power follow up - thanks!

This is a follow-up to the JD A that had a power problem after a total rebuild. I did some non-running checks and when I re-started the tractor the problem went away. Since it was just checks I’m not sure exactly what changed. My guess is that the carburetor, restored years ago and sat dry on...

    1948 JD A. - No Power

Thats an interesting thought. The spring is original and has never been replaced (Tractor has been in familiy all its life). Now it ran gad, but had more power than it does now before rebuild. Is there something I can do to check this before I just replace it?

    1948 JD A. - No Power

I had two carburetors, the worst one I sent out to be rebuilt by one of the professional shops. It was pretty bad as it has sat for a long time. That one is now on the tractor. The better one at the time, was the last one on the tractor and it did run but rough and certainly had more power...

    1948 JD A. - No Power

I am hoping someting like this would be in the last resort. Curious, If it was out by that much would'nt the valves be so out of time that a compression check might tip you off.

    1948 JD A. - No Power

Sorry the last reply to your post was misplaced here. Yes the camshaft and followers were sent out and re-ground. The original head did not pass pressure leak test so the head was replaced with one that did. This replacement head was all re-worked machined with new valves and guide valves...

    1948 JD A. - No Power

Thanks, This is exactly what I was looking for. It is what I thought should happen but was not trusting my recall. I'll repeat this over next weekend and try this again. I possibly did not have it at a high enough idle. If it still cannot run on just the load open on the carburetor, I...

    1948 JD A. - No Power

Simple to check I suppose but really not a chance of that. Air intake was completely cleaned and painted. Was also one of the last things on in a clean garage.

    1948 JD A. - No Power

Completely overhauled a 1948 JD A over the past 5 years. Complete meaning engine sleeved, crankshaft resplined, transmission reworked, new valves, NOS governor gear and pinion, magneto, carburetor etc. Started it for the first time over the weekend. It started right up and runs very smooth...

1948 JD A Remote Cylinder Rod Torque

Carlyle, I'm refering to the single castle nut with cotter pin on the rod. The 4 screws have a torque spec. but none that I can find for the piston rod. I think I could easily overtighten that castle nut.

1948 JD A Remote Cylinder Rod Torque

Thanks Pete. That's about all I could find. Hesitant to tighten too much because you can easilly squeeze the rubber seal.

1948 JD A Remote Cylinder Rod Torque

Does anyone know where to find the torque for the nut/rod on the fixed-stop type remote hydraulic cylinder? This would be for the nut (11) on the rod (44) on page 137 of the Model A (477000-) Parts catalog. This cylinder is common on the No. 5 mower. I'm not sure what else it may be located on.

    styled A tool box fit

Anyone have a picture of a styled A SN 584000-655193 tool box mounted in the front frame? I appear to have an interference with the screw/nut that holds the fan support on. I"m quite sure I have the right box, but without trimming it in that specific area it will not fit. A picture mounted in...
