Power steering Farmall super C

google search electric power steering on a farmall m you should be able to find some videos on how to install a used electric unit from a car , i have an M and a H that i'm going to try it on lot simpler and less costly than hyd.

Never heard of it before. Usually with the narrow front they steer very easy.
Have never driven a wide front one though, so that might be a different story.
What type is yours?
Wide front with a FEL. I was thinking a Charlyn Torque motor mounted somewhere on the steering shaft. Just wondering if anyone has ever done it. Thinking also of an electric unit.

My wide front end steers hard , so I put the m steering wheel.
I look a rack and pinion from a Mustang for the wide front. Never got it going cause I don’t use it that much .
Then i looked a t a corvette c power steering kit.

Has anyone ever put power steering on a C series (C-230)?
I have a 460 farmall that didn't have power steering, cut the steering shaft and put in a automotive unit in it, found a control unit on line from oversees that allows you to adjust the amount of assist. It works good.

Let’s see some photos please. The Tractor Doctor in the Red Power Magazine installed an electric steering motor on his A. I saved that article there’s not really enough open steering shaft for that large of unit. Just wondering if anyone has added PS to the C series and how they did it.

Steering wasn’t a problem when I had a narrow front. Bought a 230 a couple weeks ago and it had a heavy duty WFE which the axel tube is 11” shorter than a regular WFE. Swap the front ends to be more stable when loader is at extreme heights.

No offense intended, this is an often overlooked area..... if a C steers hard they are usually empty or full of water.

Soft and/or oversized tires on wide front end make for hard steering as well.

At 2800 pounds and 7 foot wheelbase a Farmall C is pretty short and light to carry a front end loader or to lift much. Very similar to a Ford N series tractor with a loader. There are much better loader tractors available. A loader that fits on a C might have some good collector value compared to its actual usefulness. Please post a picture of the tractor and loader.

That aside, try searching the YT archives and maybe Red Power Magazine to find other threads about power steering and loaders on Farmall Cs. The suggestions to install a larger diameter steering wheel from an H or M and/or larger diameter front tires would be low cost alternatives.

I added char Lynn power steering to my Super C. It had a homemade wide front end that was really hard to steer. I'll try to take some pictures and post them later today

Send me your phone number and I will text you a couple pictures as I have not mastered posting photos on this site Bert 712-298-0289.

finally got out to where the tractor is stored. I was reminded that the tractor is not a Super C, but a Farmall B with a Super C engine. This means the Char Lynn unit is mounted on the right side of the B tractor instead of the left side in the case of a real Super C tractor. However, I believe the Char Lynn unit could still be mounted on the left side in a similar manner to the B. The Super C would have live hydraulics which would be the best option to power the Char Lynn unit. A priority valve is all that would be needed. My Farmall B did not have hydraulics so I ended up installing a Saginaw power steering pump. The power steering pump was a bugger to install and try to fit under the hood. I hindsight I wish I would have installed a Super C live pump and a reservoir instead of messing with the Saginaw pump.

I grew up on a 200 Farmall. You do need to know how to drive one and I can give you a few tips. These things I learned making thousands of end and other turns. First, always be in motion when making a turn. On an end if you are lifting a harrow or plow give the wheel a spin while the plow is coming up, it will most likely go all the way over and peg. After the turn has been made, spin the wheel back and you will have to grab it when your front is straight. Never try to turn the wheel with the machine stopped. Front mounted planters and other equipment like loaded hoppers will add to your steering issues due to added weight. Mussel up, you are going to need it.

I’ve been operating SC’s since I was 4 years old and now I’m 71. A 1953 SC was my dad’s first “brand new” tractor. I currently own 3 SC’s and a 230. Steering has never been an issue until I mounted a loader on one of my SC’s. When I had the narrow front it wasn’t a problem, but with the HD wide front I just mounted a couple weeks ago it would sure make it nicer with PS. I was just wondering if anyone has ever added PS to a C series. I’m muscled up for 71, but why not make it easier.
Photo of my dad’s grandkids around the family SC at his funeral in 2014. Every family reunion, that SC was the center piece of the family photo. That SC is still earning its keep on the farm it was delivered to when new. My brother still farms the home place. So I don’t need to be told how to operate a C series tractor. Respectfully.

That tractor is what all of my siblings and grandkids learned how to drive any vehicle. My wife pulling with 200 we use to own. I’ve probably forgot more than you know about the C series. I won’t go into my pulling SC’s of which I’ve built over the years.
