Hole in Bell Housing

what is the 5/8 dia hole in the bell housing just in front of the 4 3/16 dust cover for the clutch on a 1948 cub? should this have a plug in it?

Yes, drain hole.

Its supposed to be a drain hole - in reality its a place for mice to get in and plug up your clutch area.

...cause when the seals start to leak the oil has to run out and not get into the clutch.

I like to cover the hole with painters tape,it will keep the varmints out(maybe) and oil will drop through the tape without getting into the clutch.

You can plug it when not in use, but should be left open when running it.
