IH 424 three point lift

I added fluid to the differential… forgot to remove the overflow plug and put in about a gallon and a half too much fluid. Realized my mistake, drained excess out through overflow plug. Cranked tractor and lift will not work now…. Nothing. What did I do and how do I fix it?

the 424 and 444 are the same in that department.

the hydraulics and differential are separate units with separate oil/fluid.

so if you put gear lube in the hydraulic reservoir that may be your problem. if so drain and fill with fresh hydraulic fluid.

I open the top mount plug on the very back of the tractor behind the seat and between the lift arms, just above the overflow plug that’s about 6” below. That is the differential , correct?

INCase, I’ve done allot of digging, so I know that plug is the hydraulic. Everyone says to drain through suction tube. This picture shows my fill plug on top, but isn’t that a drain plug next to hitch pin?

Hello jv, welcome to YT! You really need an operator’s manual in the worst way. I assume be reply 5 you have given up on that plug being for the transmission/rear end? In this linked diagram is what I believe is the fill level plug for the trans/rear end, shown as 8 that is the farthest to to right. CNHI IH 424 parts catalog
FYI: That linked catalog will let you view all the parts diagrams for your tractor. On a PC it is probably obvious, on a phone click Table of Contents to view other Functional Groups and specific diagrams.
Here is a link to the manuals YT offers. YT IH 424 manuals The operators manual will be about $45 with shipping. This will probably be the best money you ever spent on this tractor.

You are correct for the 3PT hydraulic reservoir, the fill plug is the plug on top in your photo and the drain plug is the one by the hitch Pin. Early models did not have the drain plug and you had to drain by disconnecting the pipe at the suction filter.
The proper hydraulic reservoir level is when you look down in the fill plug hole you will see sort of a shelf there and the proper level is the oil has to be above the shelf but also a couple inches below the bottom of fill plug hole. If the tractor has a loader on it that is using the 3PT reservoir then to fill the reservoir you have add oil to the reservoir to the proper level as described above then put filler plug in a couple threads so excess air can escape and run tractor and operate 3PT and loader then recheck oil level and repeat until all the air is out of the system and oil is at proper level. There has to be that couple inches of air gap below the filler plug for expansion as the oil gets warm.
If your 424 has two hydraulic lines coming from under the seat going to the hydraulic pump, the hydraulic oil fill is completely different. Let me know if your 424 has this IH Louisville, KY, USA, modification.
The transmission and differential fill plug is by the gear shift lever, level plug is on side of transmission case , I can’t remember if it is by clutch pedal or brake pedal. If I recall correctly there at least three drain plugs on the bottom of the tractor for transmission and differential oil.

Agree with Jim. I have only ever added fluid for the hydraulics through the plug at the top of the photo. On my 2424, one of the remote connections is plumbed into that hole, with a small cap that allows me to add fluid. 40 yrs and its been done like that. I add a bit every few years when I think of it.
