Farmall C jumping timing under load

Look at my pictures.......posted above. If your distributor is off the tractor and you can push the governor forward then you need to remove the governor cover and free up that spring. .
 
Had this happen to a farmall A. It would jump timing. The slotted pieces from the governor to the distributor drive would jump. To make sure this was happening while I had the distributor removed I put paint marks on two slots that matted together. Start the tractor, warm it up and engage the belly mower and hit the brakes while mowing to put extra load on the engine and wa,la, it would backfire and kill the engine. Remove distributor and paint marks are now opposite each other. Owner is a machinist so he decided to disassemble the distributor and take about .030 off the distributor housing instead of removing the governor. It took care of the jumping and has been fine since. This has been many years ago
