Used oil furnace in my shop. Insurance company sent me hate mail about my wood furnace: Remove it, or we cancel your coverage! So I took out the wood furnace, and bought the used oil furnace. I miss the wood fire, but it sure is nice to walk in and push the button.

Our County charges $1.50 per gallon to drop it off. I take it to Walmart where there is no charge but you have to log your name/ address...

Okay so I want to believe in the goodness of humanity, I'll go with the 'honest mistake". Reoccurring honest mistake, but mistake. I can see where Dingo takes his oil back to be disposed of and somebody sits it in a corner. Shift change comes along and somebody else sees it and restocks it on the shelf.

The older I get the more cynical I get, I guess not ever thing has to be nefarious.

It's been documented that's done previously with jugs of DEF at WM. One of my cousins bought a box of DEF at WM, got home, removed the cap and it was water.

I mentioned this topic to the Mrs. and she said it's a common occurrence with concentrated liquid detergents. Particularly Tide detergent for some reason (cost). Some body else mentioned it happens with latex paint too. Some people.....

Same here. I have 55 gallon of used oil in a drum currently in my shed. When it starts to get cold, I could advertise it on the local free classified and have 10 people wanting to take it from me.
At the very least, I could get some barley pop from the one guy who takes it.

Accepting used oil for recycling and carelessly taking back a container of used oil to put on the shelf are two entirely different things. The lesson here is to unscrew the cap on a supposed new oil container and make sure the seal is factory placed. You are buying the oil so why not remove the seal to assure new oil is in that container. It's not like you would stick the store with an opened container. Would you?

I’ve ended up with a couple of 5 quart jugs of oil from Walmart that were a quart short. Oil looked to be new and the right stuff, just short. For a while Valvoline had jugs with a clear top that you could see the foil seal before you bought. Unfortunately they have gone away from them.

Funny you mention that, I recently bought a 5qt. jug of walmart brand oil that was a quart short too, I thought at the time I made a mistake when changing the oil on the vehicle ( it was a Subaru that I've changed oil many times on, it hold just over 4 quarts) this time I had none left in my jug. I'm reasonably sure the seal was intact when I opened the jug ?? weird. I now remove the cap to be sure the seal is there and intact.

I just read something about that. Even the Mobile jugs were short.
Walmart use to sell 4 quart jugs along with the 5 quart.

You guys burning used oil are all going to die someday. California is protecting us. It is against the law to burn used oil in our state. I am glad my state is watching out for me. Come to California and you will live linger. Stan

I start the fire in my outdoor boiler with it. If I get more oil I had a bit extra.

Oil-fired burner with heat exchanger at work. In January it can consume nearly 5G/day. Ignitor requires cleaning at least once a season, and filters last over a year if the waste oil is pre-strained and allowed to gravity clarify (drop suspended solids) before pumping through the filter array. It amounts to about 1½ hours per season of maintenance. A gas-fired heater only requires about 10 minutes of maintenance per year if it has no air filters, but the fuel is not free. Electric resistance heat is onerously expensive, and only pushes the pollution down the wires to the generating station, windmills, or solar arrays which pollute the planet almost as much as fossil fuels.
