Years ago used oil wasn't a problem. Walk out beyond the shop and give it a toss. Used oil for me is a problem now. To save the planet, I started putting it in 55 drums. By the time I had at least two full drums, maybe 3? It took a lot of years to fill those drums. I found a company that came and drained the drums. I don't think it was cheap. Now I have a good number of jeep cans, 5 gal pales full of oil. I take a couple in at a time to Oriellys, and help fill their use oil tank. Also to other locations that have to take used oil. I'm starting to make some progress. What do you do with used oil? Stan

My quantities are not too large. Just engine oil changes. I take to auto parts as well, but, I have several shops nearby that have used oil heat. I haven't chased that yet but keep it in mind.

Same here. I have 55 gallon of used oil in a drum currently in my shed. When it starts to get cold, I could advertise it on the local free classified and have 10 people wanting to take it from me.
At the very least, I could get some barley pop from the one guy who takes it.

I drain it with one of those oil catchers that slide under the car then pour it back into the 5 quart jugs the new oil came in. When I go to the station with my trash I leave it there.

Our town uses used oil to heat the town barn. We have a garbage collection place and they stock a tote there we can just pour used oil into. Pretty handy.

I've never had a problem, most any local car repair shop will accept used oil and used antifreeze. Simply carry the used products up to the shop in one to five gallon containers, ask if they will accept them, they dump my containers into their tank and return my empty containers to me, easy-peasy.

For a 55 gallon drum I would call ahead to see if they can handle that size container, schedule a pump out, or switch to smaller containers. Technically any place that sells those products is required to accept them for recycling. Maybe ask your oil supplier if they will pick up the drums of used products when they deliver new drums of product to your shop?

This is what we do. Also have used just about every auto parts store out there. I think the only times I have ever gotten a no is when the containers are full.

If your going to go to all the trouble of putting it back in new containers then why not do what some of the riff raff around here do and take it back for a refund. See used oil on the shelf at Tractor Supply Co. surprisingly often. At first I thought it was just an honest mistake, now I'm beginning to wonder.

Trouble? It’s easy and can be done quickly at the time of the oil change. A lot easier than storing it in large containers and having to move them or pump them out.
My friend bought a jug of used oil at a Walmart. He was changing it at night and poured half of it into his car. He claimed the foil top was intact but noticed it smelled bad. He got his money back but it was a pain for sure. There are low life’s everywhere. Hopefully I will never be that hard up to become one.

Any business that sells oil in NYS also has to accept used oil! I don't know your rules! Also, around here with the cold winters, some places are looking for oil to run in their "Used oil heaters"

My local Walmart has a used oil disposal tank, in the automotive dept. I have to sign in and I'm limited to 5 gal per day.

I remember when my uncle spread it on the driveways with great results. After enough of it, the driveways were dust-free and almost as durable as a paved highway. If one did it today you'd be hauled off and put in stocks, maybe worse!
I have a waste oil company pick it up.

Yes. TSC accepts used oil. Easier to take used oil to Walmart or Advance Auto.

If you are out in the sticks you could burn it off a little at a time. It takes around 2 to no more than 3hr to burn 20gal of oil in a cut up drum. While its burning the level will rise a considerable amount. I use to burn my oil filters so I played around with this. I have a few places that take what I have to fuel their used oil furnace.

One bud that takes my oil brings over a 250gal tote with a pump with his pump it takes forever to pump it out. I never touch my used oil, the oil goes into a roll around drain tank. I use compressed air to push it through the wall into a outside storage tank. If I want to pump oil out of the out side tank I hook my inside roll around to the outside tank block the vent off and plug up compressed air push oil out of the bottom outside tank drain into a transfer tank EZ as pie : ).

I have 55 gallon drums for my oil and filters and used to be an oil recycler would come and pick up the oil free of charge. Not any more. Now you have to pay for it and the driver of the pick-up-the-oil truck tells you why.

For those of you who have a lot of used oil... There was a company that came and pumped out our oil, filtered and basically restored the oil... for a fee of course. They had a truck that took care of everything and it was pumped back into clean 55 gallon drums to be used again. It was much cheaper than buying new oil..even in the 80's and 90's.
It might be worth it to some of you to check that out and see if there is something like that in your area.

I have a guy with a big truck garage that has a furnace designed to burn used oil, he doesn't generate enough to heat the building during the winter months and takes all I generate for free, all I need to do it take it there and he gives me empty pails when I need them (if I don't gather my own when buying new oil) He's 5 miles away from me so it covenant and easy for me to keep my used oil stash at a minimum.

Between the NH 855 chain baler, a manure spreader and various other things, used oil gets used.
