PTO Overrun Clutch

The Oliver and I tangled with the Sweet Gum tree, and lost.
Tore my exhaust stack off, I ran over it with the Rotary and broke the overrun clutch ... thing on the PTO. Mobile guy was out and has me running, but says I am safer with this item. WeWon'tTalkAboutTheNekkidPTOShaft ......

Are they all the same?? TSC is $85 and eBay is $54.
I am being frugal.
Thanks!!

What tractor? Super 55? You don't need it if it is. An over running clutch is only necessary on a tractor without live power.
Sorry, yes ... a '55 Super55 :-)
The mechanic that came out last night said the Oliver would keep pushing if I pressed the clutch. My solution was just disengage the PTO then the clutch ... he was not convinced.
Tractors were my late Husband's forte ... I know enough to be dangerous. Mostly when to write the check.

Your mechanic is wrong. I run one on my Cockshutt with live PTO thinking it will save my PTO brake ??

OK. I put a new PTO clucth in my Cockshutt along with new brake pads. On this tractor when you pull back on the lever, it applies the brake and my
Cutter will over run the brake. I'm not sure if your Oliver has a PTO brake or not.

" live PTO thinking it will save my PTO brake"
And this is where I see words and have no idea of their meaning in this order.
The overrun was one of the first things my husband did on the Mitsubishi when I bought it for him, and when I bought the Oliver, I set it up the same way, because Karol impressed on me it added safety.
And I can hear the difference in the spin in and out of gear.
The (first time I met him) Mechanic said when the pin in the overrun broke, it prolly saved some major damage.
I may not need things explained like I am five ... but perhaps because I am an admitted novice trying my best. :-)

Any tractor with live power (live power means that there is a separate clutch for the PTO) does not need an overrun addition, the main clutch and the PTO clutch are not connected at all, when you disengage either one it will not effect the other. If your mechanic is used to 8N or other tractors he is right that without live power it is extremely dangerous to run without an overrun clutch.

Thank You!!!!
seperate clutch ... Mitzie and the Oliver have ... Levers? If Mitzie is being cranky, I'll grind a gear as it goes in and there are 'notches'??, if I remember. Stepping on and off, you can knock it out of gear. Ollie, push/pull the button on top, shove back and the PTO starts.
Mechanic mentioned that when the cutter hit the exhaust pipe the branch popped off, it sheared the pin and the overrun fell off and I likely avoided more damage.
Is this why my Hubby might have installed it on the Mitsubishi??
I am all about saving $80 (and that one was stolen from Mitzie since she does not wear the cutter anymore) x2
All of this is a portion of why I miss him. He was 'paid' for stupid questions.

It isn't going to hurt anything by running on your Oliver, but the Mitzie needed it. And any questions here aren't stupid.

I would think the over running clutch is rated for a certain horsepower. Your mechanic is right that breaking it saved you a big repair bill. Probably around 500 dollars to fix the PTO clutch.

Well, then ... seems Mitzie and Ollie are getting matching overruns.
If nothing else, it well make me feel better!!
Back to the question .. Are they Universal? "Are they all the same?? TSC is $85 and eBay is $54."

They are pretty much universal. Some are held on with pain through the clutch body and shaft. So are available with the same type of snap pin used to couple thePTO yoke to the tractor, those are easier to install and remove.

I was concerned about the size of the ... splines? Implements seem to fit every brand, so it makes sense these would.

540 PTO equipment is pretty much all 1-3/8", 6 spline shafts. Some of the old Fords and maybe Ferguson (I am not sure on those) had 1-1/8", 6-spline tractor shafts. You should be fine with the standard 1-3/8", 6-spline Over Running Clutch.
Yes. The early 55's had a stub shaft that was both, 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 depending on which way you flipped it. Most everything in the last 70 years is 1 3/8.

Been mowing for years with a Ford 2000 non-live PTO. Yeah, it can push the tractor but I know when to throttle down and hit the clutch. Have to stop to engage it but not a problem. Overrun is nice, I suppose, but don't believe you CAN'T mow without one.

Thank you! :-)
I actually did mow after the service call!!! He took the time to explain and demonstrate how to shift. I can now actually find third and Ollie putts right along happily. I had been only able to find Tortoise or Drag Race. Tortoise worked okay, Drag Race spooked me.
I will order a new exhaust stack and flapper from Yesterday's. Prolly buy a new PTO shaft ... the mobile mechanic stripped the plastic off because it had frozen and would not extend to hook up ... and I have things to do. I was firmly admonished NOT to get close to it when it was running. My smart alec answer was I cannot touch it from the seat. My Hubby firmly entrenched into my head that the machine does not care what it cuts or maims.

When the Ford dealer came out and laid one on the counter and told my son in law's step dad, "Don't run it without this", he thought he was just trying to sell him something he didn't need. The mower started pushing his 8N. It ran up on a stump and flipped. He was extremely lucky he wasn't killed. These things happen in an instant.

That said, the Super 55 doesn't need it with the live power.

The only time you are safe around a PTO is when the engine is off. On my 550 the PTO turns even when PTO clutch is disengaged. My 1650 is the same way. On your mowing, if you have mowed there in the past you can go a little faster. Otherwise go slow. No telling what is hidden in the grass.

13 years on this 10 acres :-) Mower is set high to take the tops off the weeds.
I pretty much know where all the pitfalls are around here.
