What happened to pickups??

I hope you don't have a smart phone. I LOL about all the people getting their knickers in a bunch over .gov monitoring their every move, yet they have a phone in their hand or pocket all day every day.
Big stink going on locally about the Flock license plate reading cameras. I wonder how many of those peeing and moaning about the cameras are posting from a phone???
Shutting a phone off does not full disable it . The phone still pings towers on occasion and can be remotely Woke up to listen and observe.

Yep, remove the battery is the only to disable a cell phone.
Leaving it on the kitchen table can create an alibi.

The issue I have with the flock cameras is their ability to mis read or be fed incorrect information. Then you get the police conducting full on armed felony traffic stops while looking to be the county’s next hero. Meanwhile they have the wrong person and no one bothers to check if the information even matches.

I have a friend who uses a Buick Estate station wagon for his primary towing vehicle. He is in his early 80s so no one thinks it is odd when we see him.🙂

Ken
I had a 1971 or 2 Chevy 4 door Estate Wagon and had to have an extra leaf added to the rear leaf springs to carry the kids, gear and 18' boat to granny's house. Detuned (EPA) 400 Big Block was a piece of .......dung!

They say you learn something every day, today I don't recall learning anything until I read your post. It's getting late and I was beginning to worry that I wasn't going to learn anything today. ;)

I was doubtful that '71 Chevy wagons had rear leafs as they had used coil springs for years, so I googled it.

Right you are, leaf springs from '71 - '77.

"Yes, full-size 1971 Chevrolet full-size station wagons featured rear multi-leaf springs. Chevrolet switched from the previous coil-spring rear suspension to a new wagon-engineered leaf spring rear suspension for the 1971 model year to better handle heavy cargo loads and towing for their new "clamshell" tailgated bodies."

I had a late 70s Pontiac Safari. Probably built on the same platform as the Chevy. Big ol Belch Fire V8 in it.
It had a vinyl landau roof.and was a
buff/brown color. I called it The Buffalo..
I drove it for about a year then traded it for a 1970 Ford F250 which got a lot better mileage.

That is vehicles for the past 25 years
My 2011 Silverado came with a little antenna on top of the cab and an automatic subscription to a radio outfit, didn't have any free access to local stations. With that antenna, it also is equipped with an emergency notification mechanism whereby if you have a wreck or something needing assistance, help is on the way........and they know where to look for you!

The connection is through the radio. I got tired of the truck beeping at me when I was doing things like not having my seat belt on when I went from the garage to the gate. Found the fuse for that beeper, removed it, and lo and behold......the radio quit working!!!!! I never used the radio anyway as I'm basically deaf and so much crap on the air now-a-days, it's not worth listening to anyway.

Have you gotten any quotes for having it done? Local member Gordy in MN gave me the # for a guy who imports clean used ones from Texas area. I called the guy yesterday and he has one- white even. He wants $2K for it.
Funny how much a new socalled PICK UP costs now . My first was a 1970 Plain jane F 250 two wheel drive . It had the gutless 360 with a four speed no power steering , no power brakes and just a AM radio and came with just a spare rim . no step bumper , no mirrors no cab lights . At that time i was working at a Ford dealership . Thru the parts dept i bought the step bumper , west coast mirrors and a cab light set . I had under 2k in all and a couple hours of my time to start. . shortly after i bought it i discovered that don't take it out into a flat grassy field as you were STUCK . So we put NEW 7.50 16 Firestone all traction tires on the rear and you were still Stuck . Next came a Detroit locker rear , vary little help . Added around a\ 100 or so pounds to the step bumper , then 12x16.5 tires then we put a 4x4 Billet of steel between the frame rails that helped some . I was learning how to hate it . Kept it for about 9 months and found a FOOL who just had to have it and sold it to him . In Sept of 72 Ford came out with the 73 model and i bought a 73 F 250 4x4 with a C 6 Automatic still some what a plain jane but had a few options like the high out put HEATER it came with a full spare the west coast mirrors and power full steering and power brakes big improvement . We added in the detroit locker and a seven and a half foot western snow plow , out door price was 4k on the money . Eight days later while setting around the shop on Saturday while having some barley pop the 360 came out and a new in the crate 428 S / C J went in. some thing i picked up when Ford ended the drag racing program . Back then if you were a Member of the Drag club you could buy the race program engines for chump change . These engines were ready to run less starter flywheel or flex plate . and exhaust manifolds . Now that was a pick up . The only WEAK point was the ft axle and the 428 liked to munch the spider gears . in Nov. of 77 i bought the worst Ford i had ever owned and that one cost me 10,217.38 and the first night never made it to the house and died in route and had to be towed back to the dealer and in the first year spend seven month total in the service dept. That was the last NEW pick up i bought . since then i figured if i am going to get JUNK and have to end up working on it myself to make something ya can depend on then that is what i will buy and make it what i want .

I didn't think the EPA crap started till 73 with the electronic ignition. and smog pumps.

In the USA PCV valves (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) became common beginning in 1963.

Starting with the 1963 model year, most new cars sold in the U.S. were so equipped by voluntary industry action so as to avoid having to make multiple state-specific versions of vehicles. PCV quickly became standard equipment on all vehicles worldwide because of its benefits not only in emissions reduction but also in engine internal cleanliness and oil lifespan.[1][8]

Mixed feelings here regarding the Detroit Locker. The vent cap disappeared off the Grand National’s rear axel . Then the rear end failed from dozens of bits of gravel . So the thought was to install a Detroit Locker . In hindsight , wishing the choice had been a Torsen limited slip instead.
The Detroit Locker on occasion will skitter the vehicle’s rear sideways if one wheel grabs traction
.

Gm started following the regs in 71
Our 72 Impala with a 350/2 bbl had points ignition, no cat, no air pump, no egr etc. My parents bought it from an old lady in 1973 with 2,000 miles on it. That was a great car. 21 mpg on the highway and ran it to ~150K miles before I pulled the engine and did a quick ring and bearing job, big cam, intake, headers and a Holley. Runs strong and fast in my 56 chevy since the early 90s. My uncle's 74 Impala had air pump,HEI, Cat, egr etc. It was a 400 small block and nowhere near the car our 72 was. In Kali the cat, smog pump and egr requirements started in 67 I believe.

That was the color and fake wood trim on my Chevy.

That tailgate contraption was probably the reason for the need for another leaf in the springs. Was living in town at the time and next door neighbor had a Ford wagon of the same body style and had the conventional layout that I liked a lot better.......but I was a Chevy lover then and stayed with the brand when shopping for a station wagon. I should have bought a Suburban but at the time they only had one side door and it was on the curb side. It would have done what I needed much better and I would have bought one if they had doors on both sides, especially 4 like you see today.

I'm in the process of fixing up a '79 Ford F250. Don't really know where I'll end up with it but I figure if I sink $30k into it I'll still be money ahead.
I don't think I'm ready to replace my '24 GMC with it, but the Ford will make a good farm truck.

By the way...
I stopped by the Chevy dealer yesterday and asked the price of a new plain jane 2500HD, 4X4 work truck + towing package.
That's about right. I've got a '24 GMC with those specs (mine is a 4 door). I lucked up and found it on a dealer's lot, most of the time you have to order.
I will say one thing, the 6.6 gas is pretty impressive for a gas burner. It won't hang with a diesel but it's more than capable of pulling a big load decent. Pretty decent gas mileage when empty too, loaded not so much. I pull a gooseneck about once a month so it's not breaking the bank.

How much truck can you expect to get for 60k? Look at the TV ads and usually the retail price is shown before the discounts they are posting to get you to spend your money. What gets me is all the retailers with thousands of '25 and '26 vehicles left on their lot and September is a month away.

Saw an ad yesterday about auto auctions of new vehicles where aftermarket (used) dealers can buy those vehicles wholesale, and it encourages you to get on the bandwagon.......not sure what the rules are for non-dealers participation.
If you want to play the auto auction game the easiest way is to become friends with a dealer. I've got a local used car dealer that will bid on anything I want at the auction, he charges $400 over what he pays. I just give him my max bid and he goes from there.
The only down side is you get what you get. He will look it over the best he can, but if it turns out to be a lemon it's your lemon.
