630 Brake Drum

How difficult is it to remove the brake drum while the brake assembly is still on the tractor. Can you get it off with a 9 or 10 inch gear puller? I need to install new brake linings and would prefer not to pull the entire assembly off the tractor.

If the brake drum moves on its splines, its off. Use a puller if you have room. Or take off the drum nut, take out the washer and lock washer, put nut back on shaft, and hit nut with a hammer.

I have removed the brake drum without using a puller. You would probably need to back the adjuster out to give clearance. I have learned that it works better for me to remove the entire assembly from the tractor. Three bolts and maybe an axle stud. That allows me clean, inspect and repair the whole assembly while clamped in my bench vise.

I may end up doing that. I'm just trying to avoid buying or making new gaskets. Thanks.

It's only one gasket!

That's true, but Deere made those drums removable for some reason.

two minutes to make one gasket vs struggling to work on it on tractor! JMHO

My method is to loosen the nut (while brake housing is on the tractor), remove one axel stud, remove brake housing from tractor. Find an oak timber, say 3x5, drop brake housing (nut down) on oak timber , from say 3 feet. This works most every time for me.
