1942 John Deere BO - Part Source?

My local dealer said this is NLA. I'm looking for a R.H. Differential shaft bearing cover part# B189R. I have rust holes in the one on the tractor. My options are find a replacement, salvage a used one, or removed and weld up my existing one. Does anyone know a source for a cup style expansion plug?

To remove that cover you would have to split the erar axle from the main case and remove the differential. What if you cleaned the cover of all outer oily residue and put some JB weld or other hard epoxy over the holes? There is no pressure to deal with from the main case and the fix would be covered by the reduction gear cover.

What unstyledB said would be my first try. If that isn't what you want, it looks like a freeze plug that may be sourced from your local auto parts or Napa or get a good measurement and google search it. Should be able to pull it out with a slide hammer!

That looks like an ordinary cup type core plug. You should be able to find one in most any auto parts store.

Video on removal. Theoretically nothing needs to be removed other than the plug. Not sure the plug in your picture is strong enough anymore to be tapped out like this?

So far I haven't found a source online that carries anything in this size. Just a quick measurement with the digtal calipers gave me 3.1435" dia.

I thought about tack welding a small tab on each side and using my slide hammer with vise grips on the end to gently pull it out without destroying it.

That's a lot larger than I appeared. You could try cleaning it really good and soldering the holes, or maybe the expandable rubber plugs.

I had the cup/plug all along. My brother reminded me that I had been given the trans/rear end case from a BR years ago and it was sitting next to the barn with blackberries growing over it. The guy I got it from gutted the transmission to restore an early BO. I figured he would have taken all of the parts out but the diff was still in it with one bearing missing and the cup was still in place and looked good. Pulled the rear axle casting off and hauled the rest to the shop in the Gator. Used an aluminum bearing/seal driver the right size and tapped the cup out without damage. Just need to remove the one from the BO and get it swapped.
