I am looking at a 1987 Ford F350 one ton truck that has a 4-speed transmission. This is a manual transmission. The owners says that to get it into reverse that you have to put it in and out of reverse several times to get the transmission to snap into reverse. He tells me that those transmissions were good for doing that. Is he right or is he giving me a line? This is a one ton dually dump box with a transmission driven pto gear box for the hoist.

Manual transmission?, feeding you a line. If automatic the same applies. Let it go to someone else or buy it at a price that figures in a possible transmission repair.

I've had a few older granny gear 4 speeds that I'd have to give a couple of stabs with the shifter or slip the clutch a bit to get the non-synchronized square cut gears lined up for reverse. But not a lot of tries. 2 or 3. Never owned a Ford so couldn't say if it might be common on them.

AS a X master Ford tech let me put it this way , I have some ocean ft property in Arizona that i could let you have for five bucks and acre . B/S more then likely a new process 4 speed . Plain simple and IF it has and issue it maybe a broken shift fork or the fork has a broken pin holding it to the shift rail. They use that trans in up to F 700 med. duty trucks and the biggest issue is synchronizers usually third and forth .

Is it a T19 transmission?
Now your asking what trans ??? man it has been a long time There was another number that excapes me was something like 485 ????? . Over my life time of number floating around in my head between knowing what parts to use to build a Ford engine into something that went fast then as a Parts manager now dealing in Chrysler numbers that rattled around in your head six days a week on parts that went across the counter day in and day out Before the day of the computer as your head was the computer . What i do remember was in like 83-84 they went with a aluim. top cover over the old cast iron . it also could be a brog warner as Ford used them also .

I remember two manuals, the NP435?? and the Borg Warner T19, but have no idea what the OP is dealing with, but he might now know either.

T18 also for 1987. Does It have a syncro first? If it does not ,there are still 2 choices. NP435 being one of them.

Good posted question. I got 89 350 460 with a 5 speed , with pto . It’s a farm dumper , and Sits a lot , interesting in comments . I think mine has a hydraulic clutch in it . I got to remember to lift the clutch pedal to get the enough fluid to push clutch open to shift it . Trying to remember how I have to run it . Thanks for posting I’m learning ,we can compare notes on this one . Been awhile ,I have not been under dash to look at clutch lines linkage ,not much floor left in it ,before we put in . North East Ohio truck ,thats about it.hopefully

ZF would be an option if you have a five speed.

The NP435 was an excellent transmission. I had an NP420 in my old 1963 D-100, and the NP435 in my 1978 Power Wagon. Sometimes it might take a couple of stabs to get them into reverse. They weren't synchronized in First Gear, and Reverse. So, it depended on what position the gears were in when the main shaft came to a stop. Sometimes you could bounce the clutch to move them for a better mesh.........clutch out, clutch in, wait for everything to slow down/stop, then shift into reverse.

I'm continually amazed at the new AI search functions. I wouldn't have expected anybody, except ones who owned them, to know that this transmission wasn't synchronized in all gears.

Is it a T19 transmission?
i don't think that question has been answered yet.

Quick ID tips

  • Look at the PTO plate location: driver’s side = T18, passenger’s side = NP435.
  • Check the cover material: cast iron = T18, aluminum = NP435.
  • Look for casting numbers: “T18‑1E” or “13‑01” = T18; “NP” in a circle = NP435.
If you’re swapping in a new transmission, the NP435’s lower gear ratio can be a big advantage for low-speed work, while the T18 is slightly stronger and more common in older Ford trucks

Yep it has a hyd. clutch . I had a 88 F 3504x4 cab and chassis . I had a bunch of issues with the hyd clutch to the point that behind the seat was a new slave cyl. and master cyl. as i had several failures out on the road . Other issues were with the brakes as in NO brakes after pulling long up hill grades on warm summer days due to the heat from the left exhaust manifold would BOIL the brake fluid out of the rear anti lock control valvethat sat just inches away . . other issues were computers as it would eat one every so often so a spare ECM was also behind the seat and two spare U/joints as it ate them too . New NAPA joints only lasted around 3000 miles or every oil change Spicer joints lasted around 15000 miles and yes they got greased . The five speed is a Z F . I put a ton of work into that truck and Ford put a BUNCH of work and money into it and one Ford dearler's shop foreman learned a lot about a 460 on the do's and Don't when working on a 460 from me and my days working on the 385 block motors . He was impressed on how well my 460 ran and what all i did to it . I put 287000 miles on that 460 and it still did not burn a qt. of oil between changes. On yours ya may want to look at the firewall where the clutch master cylinder mounts as they would crack and let the fire wall flex i had to repair mine .
