Which alternator to use for conversion????

I have a Massey MF35 the generator no longer doing the job. Have a 12V coil so I am going to convert it to a alternator. I have read several different opinions on which to use One wire or the 3 wire GM version. What have you found to work best for you? I really thank everyone for any help that has been givien in the past, as all of this is new to me and I am learing something new each day.

3-wire is the way to go. Standard, "off-the-shelf" alternator, cheaper than a one-wire unit.
A 3-wire unit will begin to charge at lower RPM's than a "one-wire" unit. too. You can pick up a good one for a 1975 to 1985 Chevy pickup for as little as $10.00 at a "recycler".

If you don't want to use the diode, use an "idiot light" with a #194 bulb, or equivalent.

I don't know about $10, but I got a rebuilt unit and then went to the junkyard and picked up an old junker 10si and used it as a core. They wanted $20 for the junker, and the store gave me $30 core charge refund, so I was ahead $10. It put a 10si back in the system going to be rebuilt instead of scrap metal.
I have seen on a site called Alibaba that there is a company in China that makes an identical copy. I wonder about the quality.

I realize there are some good reasons to convert them to alternators, but for about $100 you can also have the genny rebuilt. I know it isn't as cheap as buying a new alternator but I just don't like tractors that have been converted.

I can understand on a tractor with a high electrical load running 5 extra headlights and a monitor and a few other do-dad's, but for any other job the generator is all that you need. Plus if your 35 happens to have a tach, now you won't be able to use it because that is driven off the back of the generator. If you absolutely MUST convert it, atleast sell the corpse form the genny to a rebuilder so it can be rebuilt and put to goofd use for someone else.

I always like being able to go in with a dead generator, and walk out that same trip with another rebuilt unit, instead of waiting a day for them to rebuild yours and taking another trip to go get it. Got that lucky for the genny on our 165.

Thanks very much for all the info. I think I can get it done now. As far as putting the genny back on its not going to happen at this time. I do plan to have it rebuilt to put it back on in the future. But the nearest place that does this is over two hour drive from me. yes I do live in the sticks as some would say.

Just ordered one from YT but it didn't come with a wiring diagram. Anyone have that? I bought the extra connector that wa suggested.

If you purchased and installed the ADR0382 you only need a battery power wire hooked to the alternator.
