Tach Needle and carb tuning.

Hey everyone. I am wrapping up a restoration on a 1956 John Deere 520. Looking for insight on two things.

I installed a new tach cable and when the tractor is running the hour meter is counting up but the needles does not move.

I rebuilt the carb and I can tell it’s running a bit lean. Putting the choke on half seems to make the engine run a lot smoother and better. Is there a way to adjust the carb so I don’t have to run it at half choke?

Thank you.

You can have your hour meter rebuilt, fix your needle problem! As for the carburetor, first, is it the correct number carb, Should be Marvel-Schebler DLTX-99 for gasoline fuel. John Deere part no. AB5151R. M-S number is on a tag on the carburetor. You can adjust. Your adjustable starting setting for the LOAD is 2 1/2 turns out from being screwed clear in. One screw at bottom of bowl. Idle adjustment is two T-handle screws, one under each carb barrel. Starting point is screw in to stop, back out 1 1/2 turns out. You said you need to use choke to run smooth? Idle or Load? Warm-up tractor and try adjusting either load or idle?

Thanks Jim

Do you know of places I can have the tach rebuilt?

As for the carb. It’s a DLTX 75 I think. I know it’s a carb for a 50 but research told me it would work. Maybe I am mistaken. After rebuilding it, I set it to those default settings for the adjustment screws. It idles just fine cold and warm. It struggles when it wants to switch to the load circuit. It doesn’t seem to matter whether the tractor is warm or not. It runs much better in the load circuit at half choke.

I don't think Evergreen Restoration can rebuild tach internals....they can replace the face and needle. Or they can sell you a reproduction of the one you have.
