Helping a widow: gas leak out carb

Neighbor has this unit. I think it's an 8N.
When I turn on the fuel, gas dumps out of the bottom of the carburetor.
How should I fix this?

If the gas runs out the carb when the tank valve is turned on, that sounds like the needle in the carb is not seating (closing) for some reason. That can be a problem with the needle and/or seat. It can also be caused by a bad or hanging float not moving the needle to close.

A proper rebuild (meaning a thorough cleaning, a kit, and any hard parts found bad; not just open clean some and put it back together with old gaskets and worn parts) would be the first step to me.

This is pretty much the same answer for any gravity fed updraft carb regardless of what it is on. JMHO
