With silage harvest in this area completing and the dust of the bean combine helping to paint the midwestern sun set amber I visited the electric library for some reminiscing.

View attachment 166580This one’s for Jon.

The pictures of the Stickney and the flaming four catch my eye.
The haphazard placement of the hoops in the first picture look like a disaster in the making!
There is a wooden, octagonal silo near here. It stood empty for decades, but was blown over in the last few years. I was surprised to see intricate framework which yielded a round interior. The original silo here was square, wood framed, with interior and exterior vertical wood siding. Would the corners have caused issues?

If I was laying the bricks for that brick silo it never would have gotten more than 6 feet tall. Not the kind of work I can ever do.I'd rather watch paint dry.Just trying to imagine how it was built. One bricklayer?10? one tender? 10 tenders? No tenders? One good bricklayer could run two tenders into the ground on a job like that.

The Amish I buy ny feeders from were filling their silo the same way a couple weeks ago when I was picking a few head up, horses and portable engine on wheels, no fancey Case tractors though.

Great pictures, thank you!!!

In the third picture, what is the big pile in the back ground, a hay stack? Could there be a feeding manger on the back side of the stack?

Most of the men in those pictures look young to me, probably only a few over 40 and none over 50?
