641 broken gear

My 641 with a 4 speed transmission has a broken gear. I’m not sure if anything is broken on the bottom shaft, but I didn’t see any pieces that I could contribute to the bottom. Is there a way to remove the top shaft and peek below without performing the dreaded double split? I have a manual, but I am hoping that someone here has a secret trick to get the top shaft out. Thank you in advance for helpful replies. Al

A split it will be. Those transmission's are EZ to repair most all need new bearings anyways. Just for reference the neutral gate must align straight if its off you have a bent fork.

Thank you Sir. I was afraid that would be the case, but I knew the membership here has much more knowledge than I. I was hoping after the engine rebuild, hydraulic overhaul and paint that I was done!

I needed to service a 5 speed on a 901. I custom built a rolling cart to facilitate. It allowed me to easily remove the transmission from the rear end and then served as a work bench for disassembly/service/reassembly. Made the job straightforward, very controlled. It's been quite handy for other things since then. You'll need a shorter one, but I'm confident it would work similarly.

That’s fantastic. I thought about using my cherry picker for the middle, but that stand is WAY more controlled! I have an engine hoist at the front of my shop to hold up the front of the tractor, and a floor jack for the back. Thanks for the idea!
