4030 clutch won't disengage

My guess is one or both traction clutch plates were damaged while joining tractor 1/2's back together. Were tractor 1/2's parallel with each other when rejoining together? I also suggest to check clutch operating hyd pressure.
I just had a thought about something I didn't understand. After I got everything back from deere, they left the clutch bolted to the flywheel. I compressed the fingers and shimmed them in position with washers before removing the clutch. When I installed the clutch back onto the flywheel, I tightened the six bolts and the fingers were way tighter than when I removed it. Is this normal, or an indication of something wrong?

Sorry but It's been too many years since I witnessed a tractor with Perma-clutch apart to correctly answer your question. I was thinking clutch fingers were loose enough when PP was bolted to flywheel to rattle but I could be wrong.

If the fingers are tight, the clutch is engaged. You need to find a permaclutch installation tool to set the fingers after installation.

Sorry, it was late and I missed a key detail. After removing the washers, the fingers were loose. But when I went to remove the washers, the fingers were much tighter than when I installed them. I had to push much harder on the fingers to get the washers out than I did when installing them.

We have this split and can find ZERO damage. Nothing with the pilot bearing, nothing in the splines. The only thing we see is that two fingers have right at 1/4 inch of freeplay and one has zero. The old guy at Deere said that this is typical, but it sure doesn't seem right.

The clutch and flywheel were taken to deere and adjusted with the tool. When I picked it up, the clutch was still bolted to the flywheel. I pushed the fingers down hard and shimmed them in place before removing the clutch from the flywheel. I then lay the clutch down with the hubs hanging free.

With the tractor split, one finger has zero freeplay and two of them have about 1/4 inch. The guy at deere said this is typical.
