    IH 404 clutch not engaging

I believe clutch was stuck. Towed back & forth in driveway & looked like throw out bearing was much closer to pp. Compounding issue was broken old poor weld on clutch release shaft that occurred after problem when I tried to adjust linkage (hammer involved). Rewelded shaft & now...

    IH 404 clutch not engaging

Cat, Not far from you - between DeWitt & St Johns & no rush on getting in done. Thought about trying it myself but my main issues are: right tools & stand to split & knowing how to do it the right way once in there. If you don't mind Here's my email: [email protected] for continuing this...

    IH 404 clutch not engaging

Red, You nailed it. I abused the clutch & fried it. I use the loader to move some fill, black dirt, or put logs on the stand for slabbing. This time was different. After trapping out the muskrats in our pond I had the bright idea of digging out their den hotel. (Tired of new 'rats using the den...

    IH 404 clutch not engaging

Fred, Cat, & Red The clutch pedal is a wet noodle, virtually no resistance. Looks like the clutch release bearing is just shy of depressing the fingers on the plate. (I have manuals.) the release bearing is free spins & slides on shaft. Cant see anything wrong or any debris anywhere and no...

    IH 404 clutch not engaging

Sorry I was not clear. Pushing the clutch pedal has no effect. If in gear the and you push the clutch pedal the tractor keeps moving. If running out of gear and push the clutch to put it in gear it grinds teeth and will not go in gear. Tractor lurches if you try to start in gear with clutch...

    IH 404 clutch not engaging

Got out my loader 404 to move a little dirt. After a few minutes had no clutch. I've made no change in adjustment/linkage and can see no loose or missing bolts. Can see the throw out bearing does not fully engage forward as there is a shiny maybe 1/2 on the shaft still showing. What could make...

404 timing better but no start.

OK here goes: RE changing condenser /points & screws. I struggled at length to put back the screws in a horizontal mounted distributor when you can not see the holes. It's also a loader tractor. Ended up using sightly longer screws held one in place for condenser with putty while I lined it up...

404 timing better but no start.

It does not snap back it's slop something is worn. I've read everything over and over & followed it. Believe me I appreciate it. I do have the shop manual, parts manual, and operators manual. Thanks for your time.

404 timing better but no start.

I see there is a lot of movement in the rotor. It has almost 3/16" slop & you can move it back & forth real easy. The gear looked okay. I think its the piece the rotor attaches to ... the cam? Is there a rebuild kit? Thanks.

404 timing better but no start.

Followed instructions from previous posts for finding TDC & setting rotor to #1. It is turning over freely now not fighting the starter, but still not starting & coughing when it turns over. Do I continue to pull & reset distributor or can it be fine tuned by loosening & turning? Need to be...

    404 dist 180 off?

I didn"t crank it too long but did notice the coil got a little warm. I"ll see if I can tweak the timing a bit. I"m light in the "good" department on this so I could use some luck. Much appreciate the help. Thanks.

    404 dist 180 off?

Had to pull my distributor & replace gear pin. Now it turns over hard / slow like the battery is about dead & when I take off the distributor cap she turns over normal. What"s goin on? By the way Pete 23 was right on the money about using too long of screw for the points & fouling the advance...

    404 distributor continued saga

Pete nailed it used a 1/8 inch longer screw. I even thought about it & decided naw clearance wouldn"t be that small. So got a new pin for the gear & reinstalled everything. Found TDC I thought with finger over the hole, lined up rotor with #1 got spark at #1 immediately when I touched it off. So...

    404 distributor continued saga

Thanks for all the advice on previous post 2 weeks ago. Need some more! After changing cap, rotor, & wires I figured out I was still getting spark intermittently so I replaced points & condenser. Trying to do this step by step so as to limit parts changing and chances for screw up. Looks like I...

    404 distributor

Thanks for all the advice. Need some more! I realized the spark I was seeing was intermittent so I changed condenser & points after dong the same on cap, rotor & wires. In setting the point gap the shaft turned a few times and now the shaft has quit rotating. What"s my next step? I gather the...

    404 distributor

I'm obvioulsy pretty green at this. To be clear with the coil wire disconnected at the cap I get spark when held by the frame. So the trick is to align the #1 wire to the rotor when it's TDC for #1 cyl? Thanks for your patience. RLO

    404 distributor

She"s been hard starting & missing (winter in MI) so I took off the dist cap and the coil nodule on the cap was worn flat. Put on new cap & rotor now fires worse (less) that before. Rotor spinning & coil sparking. No spark to plugs. Didn"t put the new points in because the breaker cover is on...

    404 rear tire swap

Need to replace my 13.6 x 28"s. Can get some used 13.6 x 24"s local & reasonable. Will this work / or make a material difference? I use her for a little brush hogging, hauling firewood, & sometimes moving dirt with the loader. (Checked the archives on this subject) Thanks. Rich
