New crank pulley from Steiner muucchh too tight, won't go on 1941 Ford 9n on initial try

All done. I talked with the parts vendor (Steiner) last week and they graciously sent a new pulley, and asked me to return the original with a Steiner-supplied UPS label. While on the phone with Steiner, the man at Steiner mic'd his pulley (1.18 inches) and I did mine (1.17 inches) - inside...

New crank pulley from Steiner muucchh too tight, won't go on 1941 Ford 9n on initial try

Thanks gents. Some responses: taken the issue up with Steiner. Thought about that and might call them, wanted to check here first. mic'd the crank stub OD and pulley bore. All I have are cheapie plastic calipers but am helping a friend put shingles on his shed roof today and he's got all the...

New crank pulley from Steiner muucchh too tight, won't go on 1941 Ford 9n on initial try

Hi all, again, Last Thur Sept 24 I posted about 9N crankshaft pulley removal to address a bad oil leak and got great feedback. The (probably) original pulley was lightly pitted and visibly worn so I got part no ABC021/Made in Taiwan from Steiner Tractor Parts to replace the old one. Also got a...

Ford 9N pulley removal, pulley/crank rotate with tractor in gear

I was JUST looking into one piece front seals when your suggestions came through. Here is the pulley. Light pitting, grooved/ridged/whatevered. It's time. The pictured one might be 85 years old.

Ford 9N pulley removal, pulley/crank rotate with tractor in gear

Hello, again. I'll try to respond to all the helpful responses. Indeed fourth gear is the way to go and I understand why and with the hi-lo lever all the way forward and the tractor in fourth, the wheels DID move so I "solved" that matter. But I got the threaded nut-bolt off with a piece of...

Ford 9N pulley removal, pulley/crank rotate with tractor in gear

Hi- I'm disassembling my 1941 Ford 9N to access the front oil rope seals and replace them since it leaks a bunch up there. Got it tore down to removing the timing gear cover and am confounded by getting off the (pretty sure its original) nut that secures the pulley. The tractor is in 1st gear...

    1941 9N distributor, contact points, coil +

As part of remedying problems for a 1941 9N which stopped running and would not start, including a blown head gasket, and subsequent cracked block, I tore into the front mount distributor. This poor component on my 9N kept getting dosed with overheating coolant belching out of the radiator top...

1941 9N getting new head gasket, NAPA part FPG HS7277B, Fel Pro...sealant/copper coat needed?

Wrapping this up and hoping it might help others. I got a welder to come out on a chilly AM. He said no-go since unless the block (this 9N is always outdoors, but in three-sided shed) went into his heated shop, trying to weld was too great a risk. Outside, he possibly could not get the metal up...

    Stupid question, (ford 9N)

Years ago when there was a brick and mortar Ford tractor dealership in Culpeper VA, I needed a starter motor to replace the original charred starter for my 9N which at this point was 12 volt conversion. The parts man sold me a 6-volt starter which was all that was in stock and recommended using...

1941 9N getting new head gasket, NAPA part FPG HS7277B, Fel Pro...sealant/copper coat needed?

Here is the gasket I used, part number in the subject line. I did not use sealant. A local engine builder, probably almost the last of several where I live in central Virginia, really helped out. He told me on the phone to bring the head over for checking out, dropped what he was doing on a...

1941 9N getting new head gasket, NAPA part FPG HS7277B, Fel Pro...sealant/copper coat needed?

Thanks for the helpful responses everyone. I should add, it was a 50/50 water/coolant mix in no 3 cylinder, not just water.

Hello- My 25-year old head gasket is shot and water was in no 3 cylinder. New gasket kit coming, as described in the subject line and seen here...

    couple quick 9N thermostat ?s

Hi- In the attached photo, is the just-bought-by-me 180 degree thermostat oriented correctly for installation in the hose? Also, when that or any thermostat is closed, where does the coolant go? Sorry for the dumb question, but... I presume it circulates around the engine block? Thanks.

9N coil "testing" and a happy ending

I posted about radiator woes a while back. The front axle was rising up high enough to push the lower inlet (outlet?) part of the radiator where the lower hose attaches and that, I thought had caused some cracking down there which led to a slow leak of coolant which, coupled with my forgetting...

9N coil "testing" and a happy ending

Hi, occasional poster here: After some rains a week ago, I hooked up a box rake to the '41 12V 9N to smooth out the pot-holed driveway. Partway through the job, the radiator puked out coolant (thought I had that problem fixed...) and the tractor died. Leaving it out in the rain in the past...

    9N Marvel-Schebler poppet return spring

JMOR, wore out- Thanks fellows. 25 years with a mystery spring in the wrong location... I have had this tractor, mostly running, since 1995. True story: It got pushed SIDEWAYS 25 feet when caught in the great Madison County VA rainstorm/debris flows of June 27, 1995, and the crankcase filled...
