couple quick 9N thermostat ?s

Hi-

In the attached photo, is the just-bought-by-me 180 degree thermostat oriented correctly for installation in the hose?

Also, when that or any thermostat is closed, where does the coolant go? Sorry for the dumb question, but... I presume it circulates around the engine block?

The thermostat is downside up.

The copper ''bulb'' is the heat-sensing element and needs to face the source of hot coolant... the cylinder head.

The waterpump is a centrifugal pump capable of producing only a low pressure, when the thermostat is closed the waterpump is not able to pump/circulate coolant and simply builds the pressure it it capable of.

Some newer and/or more sophisticated cooling systems use a more elaborate system to recirculate a large flow of coolant while the t-stat is closed to prevent ''hot spots''.

The new style thermostat for the 9N, 2N, and 8N is a rectangular unit with one end pointed and that end always goes facing the radiator. The original N Thermostat was rectangular, no pointed end, and had a positive stop steel band on the hose to keep the unit in place from creeping up to the radiator inlet. New ones MADE & sold by Denny Carpenter have the band now too. His thermostat is also marked with an arrow 'TO RAD'. Not all parts are equal. It matters where you buy from. Unit only goes into the upper radiator hose. You can use a plastic wire tie to secure the unit in place on hose if you don't have a band on yours. In the Winter 2020 N-News, YT Forum FORD member wrote a good artoc on the N Cooling System worth reading. He explains the differences between anti-freeze and what to correctly use. I'll add that you want to include the cooling system on your PM schedule. Keep the hose clamps tight; the grille & radiator free of chaff and debris; the proper coolant and radiator filled correctly; the correct radiator cap and a good, tight seal; and never overfill the radiator.
