    Update on starting woes

This might well be a possibility - had a quote for rebuilding the starter of at least £75. Also tested the battery and that's not in great shape, so another one of those will be another £60+. So while I'm pleased that I think I've figured out why it wouldn't start (with all your help, thanks...

    Update on starting woes

Thanks Bob/Ralph - will have a good look at the starter this week and compare the notes from this thread. Will also check out a couple of those auto electrician place listed - I know where two or three of them are. Thanks again all for taking the time to reply... Matt

    Update on starting woes

Thanks Bob/Jerry/Jack Have spoken to my Dad tonight and he's going to pull out the stater motor this week and get some pics of the inner workings - I'll put them up and see what people think. In the meantime, going toget myself round a few local garages, see if they do testing and/or...

    Update on starting woes

Thanks Brian - can't check the link as I'm at work and the firewall doesn't like ebay, but will check when I get home. We've bought stuff from silbver fox before for a Bristol Crawler we're working on, I just wasn't sure whether there was a specific kit for 6v starters, or whether all the kits...

    Update on starting woes

Thanks Jerry - I only fastened it to those bolts as I'd found a wiring diagram that showed it done there - typical that I made a cable to the wrong place. Will re-make it a bit longer! Will also go round and re-check all the earths. It sounds as though they have to be pretty much spotless...

    Update on starting woes

Thanks Gerald - sounds like an expert sort of job. Think I will test the battery one last time to convince myself it isn't that, then maybe I will have to bite the bullet and get the starter rebuilt. If anyone in the UK has any recommendations that won't have me selling my house, I'd be glad...

    Update on starting woes

No, nothing else that's 6v in our shed I'm afraid. I suppose I could connect two batteries together and see if it starts anything 12v. I'll have a look into anyone in the UK who rebuilds starters for a reasonable amount - not holding my breath though! And try and find one of these amperage...

    Update on starting woes

Hi Brian - thanks for the reply. In answer to your questions: Yes, battery has been recently charged, though from the little I understand about batteries, this might only mask the problem if there's an issue with the battery. Yes, all the connections are good - cleaned them myself and applied...

    Update on starting woes

Hi all - posted a couple of weeks ago about the problems we were having with starting our 6v TEA-20, and thought I'd post an update (and ask more advice!!!). As you may remember, not only were we getting a very sluggish spin of the starter, but the switch didn't seem to be working. So I moved...

    TEA-20 starting and charging

Thanks John - will have a go at those points on Sunday. We've already moved the earth off the dash, but the only place it would reach was one of the fuel tank bolts. If I end up making a longer cable as they're a) old or b) the wrong gauge, I'll make it longer. I've seen some that bolt on to...

    TEA-20 starting and charging

Thanks Phil - I believe we're using the ones that were on the tractor, but it's certainly something I will check on. Are those gauges of wire US, or will they be the same in the UK? Ta, Matt

    TEA-20 starting and charging

Excellent, thanks Klaus, found the diagram in question and it appears that you just connect it in line with the wire from the A post of the control box to the starter switch, so as long as I get them the right way round, even I should be able to manage that!!

    TEA-20 starting and charging

Thanks Klaus - I have a spare ammenter in a box somewhere - are they voltage specific, or will any one do? I"ve seen a wiring diagram with an ammeter in, so I"ll review and have a think about it on Sunday Thanks for replying, Matt

    TEA-20 starting and charging

Brilliant, thanks Jeff, that's really useful - the switch is only a few months old, and when I took it back off to check, it all seemed to operate ok, so I suspect that what you've described about it is the problem, and I need to move the starter forward to make it more sensitive. Am going over...

    TEA-20 starting and charging

Hi all, hope you can offer a bit of help. My Dad and I have rebuilt a wrecked TEA-20 up over the last few years, and we"re just about there save for a couple of niggles. The tractor is a 6 volt version, and I"ve cleaned and cleaned all the connectors up, but still get a very sluggish turn over...

    Effects of Easistart

Hi everyone - new to this board, having just finished fixing up a grey fergie, we"re onto a blue diesel dexta. Now this tractor did run, though it was covered in black gunk everywhere and was badly in need of tidying up. The previous owner used to start it with a certain amount of easistart...

    TEA-20 starting problems - Part 5

Interesting - was a new control box, but then again, we've put 12v through it before trying to get it to run, so mebbe we've done it in. Will have a look whatever you send though John - thanks for your continued help!!! Matt

    TEA-20 starting problems - Part 5

We're done - it runs! We ended up buying a replacement carb from old20.com, it's not an original Zenith, but some replacement one that fits, and it started up! I remade some of the connections, and stripped the starter, and now we can get it started (just) on the 6v battery - I'm not...
