06 GMC wheels

The alum. wheels on my 06 GMC 2500D are pitted badly from road salt. I found replacement wheels for $122. Would they be as good as having my wheels turned down. Thanks

What do you mean "having your wheels turned down"? If you are talking about removing a substantial amount of material from the wheel, I wouldn't do it. About all I would consider is sanding and painting.

Corroded wheels can be repaired fairly easily in your shop. You have to follow a sanding pattern and remove all the corrosion and as much coating as you can. Once you have sanded down your wheels you can spray bomb them with wheel paint or plain aluminum paint. When dry spray them with clear coat. Go to YouTube and type in aluminum wheel resurfacing. You will find a tutorial on how to do this. The wheels come out like new. When ready to paint I break the bead and place shop towels around the tire, this keeps paint off the tire. When dry I blow them up and put them on.

I had an 07 GMC that had that issue to the point where I was loosing air pressure. I bought a set of take off wheels new from a dealer with new tires. It ran me $1,200. A local dealer near me sells trucks with upgraded wheels all the time. They were more than happy to get rid of a stock set. The day I went they had 6 sets to choose from. Made my 07 look a heck of a lot newer.

Seems like aftermarket rims go bad faster than oem rims.

I would look on craigslist for a set with tires. Young whippersnappers can't resist replacing their nearly new tires and rims with aftermarket rims and different tires.
Although 8 luggers will be harder to find.

Dismount a tire and strip it with Airplane Paint Stripper, most auto parts stores with a paint department will have it. Use a Mothers Aluminum Polish Wonder Ball (walmart) . The one that I have seen look better than new,and really not a lot of work.

Having then turned has me thinking you are talking more about the bead seat on the inside of the rim.

If so, are the rims chromed plated? GM for some reason thought that it was a good idea to chrome plate the inside of rims at one time. Once the chrome starts pitting and chipping badly about the only way to stop them from leaking is to remove the chrome.

Non chromed wheels using a 4" Nylon Wheel Brush does a good job cleaning wheel bead seats.

Yes mule. My factory 20 " chromes leaked so bad, I switched to 17 " aluminum. No
problems since. Speedometer is spot on.
