#1 Cylinder stuck

Hello.
Really BAD mistake!
I was trying to time the NAA today and I had a screwdriver in the # cylinder sparkplug hole to find TDC and I leaned on the tractor and my hand hit the starter button which engaged the motor and got the screwdriver stuck in there real good.
Cant pull it out as it is wedged Hard!
How can I back the engine off so it will release?
I cant crank it by the belt and tried the Nut on the crankshaft pulley but it just comes loose, it wont turn the engine .
I need to get this out so Please help if you can?
Thank you so much.

Alpha1........see them BIG levers called ag-bar tires??? Just putter in 3rd gear and ROCK yer tractor back'n'forth. Simple, eh?

And learn a lesson, huh? ........Dell

prybar on flywheel ring gear with starter removed?

put in 1st gear and roll backwards? might try that one first...

check the threads in the head.. might need to run a spark plug chase in there in case top thread on one side rolled or mashed..., and / or other threads flattened.. etc.

grease up the tap real good to catch any chips.

perhaps blow air intot he cyl with a wand after that to clear any erant chips out..

Man....I feel for you - stuff like that is super frustrating - with luck once you get that screwdriver out things will be fine. Got my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for the help guys, going out to try it now!

#1....take the battery cable off the hot or ground post.

#2....engauge the pto

#3....tranny to neutral

#4....turn the pto shaft until the piston backs off of the screw driver

Simple eh!!!!!???? One man operation!!!

I always suggest using a plastic drinking straw. Even the MECHANICALLY CHALLENGED will have a hard time doing much damage with one of those!

tried 3rd gear and rocking it. NOTHING
tried Reverse and a tug . NOTHING
starter off on Flywheel and pry bar. Nothing.
Its in there tight.
PTO tried to turn its locked.
I am guessing I need to remove the cylinder head and try and get in there.
Thanks for all your help guuys. i do apprceiate it ! :)

(quoted from post at 18:33:38 08/24/11) Tried that and no sucess.
It wont budge

Just wondering, are the other spark plugs still in the head, or have you pulled those also? Having all the plugs out should make the engine move much easier.

Follow GB in MT's instructions and put a BIG pipe wrench on the PTO. Be sure you are turning it backwards.

If you have the starter off and are prying (in the correct direction) with a bar and it's isn't backing off, it's REALLY stuck!

(OOOPPPSSS!)

Thank you for your idea.
Yes I did pull the plugs.
and unfortunately still jammed.
I got it too budge gripping vice gris on it and prying with a pry bar but its tight!
I will try a pipe wrench on the pto. Used a PTO shaft and it wouldn't budge butI need another set of hands for that.
Thanks for the help guys!

Here is my nightmare !
go aheaad and laugh.... I had to myself.
I swear my life could be a tv show....

Pull the starter off and use a pry bar on the flywheel and turn it back wards. Or you may have to pull the head off to get it out. But you may end up having to pull the head off no matter what because you may have cracked or broken a piston on top of just getting it stuck

no.. not yet.

try the pipe wrench on the pto shaft again.

I simply can't imagine a bump of the starter has that piston SO bound up against the head that it won't turn backwards.

that pto shaft is made to take 45hp.

put the trans in neutral, that way you aren't trying to move the drive train, then use the pipe wrench with a 4 or 5' pipe on it on the pto shaft. NOW.. TURN BACKWARDS.. be sure of this... it almost has to move.. ps.. go ahead and pull the rest of the plugs to make sure there is not a hyd lock going on in another cyl

I really cannot believe that turning the PTO shaft, did not let the screwdriver just fall out!!!!!!!!!
You would not believe how many times, I've told guys to do that, and the report has always been, that it works!!!

Gotta believe he, tried turning the shaft forward, instead of backwards!!!!

I wonder if they realize there is a gearset involved that flips the direction from that of the crankshaft to that of the PTO???

The crankshaft turns CW as viewed from the front and the PTO turns CCW as viewed from the front.

The PTO turns CW as viewed from the rear. So you would turn the PTO CCW as viewed from the rear to make the piston back off and release it's death grip on the screwdriver.

You got it Bob;
Guess from now on, it has to be explained like you just did, to get them to understand, how that works.!!!!!?????
I thought that the steps to do that were self-explanitory, the way I wrote it,.....BUT,....Guess NOT!!!

GB  [/i:bfc642e0b4][/b:bfc642e0b4](Guess, I can't spell too good either!!)

I went and retried the PTO shaft and pipe wrnech and got it loose!!!
I was not pusihng it hard enough last night therefore it would not pop but today I just yanked a little harder and it popped loose.
THANKS for all your help guys!
Much appreciated!!!!!!
Now on to try and time this tractor and get it running again.
I'll be back soon :)
Thanks again!!!
