1 wire alternator

I just purchase a 1-wire alternator. My question is where do I go with the hot wire? I don't have an ammeter in the system.

I cannot see any good reason to use a one wire. I have had a couple but since I learned how to wire the others I have found that the one wire need more RPMs to start charging.

The wire needs to be 10 gauge and gets hooked where ever the + battery cable hooks. Starter; starter solenoid; battery post; ect.

If this is the Delco 10si alternator; I will have to agree with the other post. You will most likely be back in a few weeks asking how to re-wire it with 3 wires because it will not charge until you rev the engine to full throttle. Once it starts charging it will charge well but getting it to start can be a problem.

Now do not get me wrong. They do make a true one wire 10si. It was used in marine situations and cost over $80 for a rebuilt unit. But since the common three wire alternator will work as a one wire with the full throttle treatment; most said to be one wire alternators are really not.

We have several 1 wire alts. in tractors and have no problems with them.They kick in at fairly low RPM.

I have heard of battery drainage over long periods,but a remedy (diode) is easily installed inline if needed. ~brad

i got a 1 wire one a to30 no problem soon as she fires up i rev her up just a little and the ol amp meter starts showing charge works great actually

Install an ammeter or wish you had. They are cheap and reliable too.

IMHO, a manual battery disconnect switch is a better idea than adding a diode in the charge line on a 1-wire setup.. etc.

Hey Dan
If you need to monitor your battery's state of charge you need a volt meter. The amp meter will only show the amount of charge going into the battery, while the volt meter will tell you how much voltage/potential IS in the battery.
A/c generators/alternators generate as much as 1/3 the rated output at idle, REGARDLESS OF CONSTRUCTION or # of wires.
