why can't I get in gear, the only way I can get it gear is to shut it off and put it in gear restart and off it goes.

Hello 4549, welcome to YT! Maybe you should try again or at least take a punt! At lest tell us what tractor are you working on? Sounds like the clutch is stuck/rusted so it doesn’t release. The Edit button is at the lower left. If you use a phone or tablet the 3 dots to the right of Report at the lower left give access to the edit feature. It will allow you to edit the Title or Subject as well.

1967 Jake chief 1200. the only way to get it in gear is to shut it off put in gear and start it to go. it really grinds other wise.

Along the lines of what used red MN said do you have a manual for it? Have you done the clutch and brake adjustments as called out inthe manual?

Do you have the original belt cover installed? The belt on those Jacobsen Chiefs is really long, and even though the idler pulley is giving the belt some slack, the weight of the belt will keep the transmission pulley spinning, thus making the transmission hard to shift (without grinding the gears, at least.)
The belt cover has two shelves in it, that support the upper side and lower side of the belt when the clutch is pressed. I am also thinking your tractor should also have some sort of belt guide around the engine pulley as well. It has been over 20 years since I worked on one, so my memory may be a little foggy.

the original belt is on it checked the belt guides they are all there. noticed oil leak near back pulley.

All done? Does that means correct adjustment was done and now it works or adjustment was done and it still does not work correctly?

As other's have stated your issue is likely caused by the relationship of the clutch pulley and the brake band. When you depress your foot on the clutch/brake, it should relieve tension from the belt, and pull the brake band to stop the gears.

It's one of those 3 things:
1. Clutch pulley not travelling enough
2. Belt not the right length and keeps tension even when clutched.
3. Brake band not engaging. If you remove the side pulley cover, you can see all of this relationship at play and should be able to figure out the issue from there.
