1010 cylinder head question.

I think I have pushed my luck about as long as I can with my 1010 gas and am going to have to do something about the one almost dead cylinder. I believe it is losing compression out the exhaust valve. What can you tell me about the valve seats? I understand there are replaceable guides. Just wondering what the chances are that I will need a different head versus seating new valves into the existing head.

Did One Last Year.. Take To A Machine Shop They Can Install New Guides And Seats.... I Had New Guides And Seats And All New Valves And Springs Installed... 650.00 .. All John Deere Parts !!!

Good chance all you'll need is a few new valves. You can regrind the seats pretty deep (unlike a diesel). If you can't clean up the seat with a grinder or cutter, you can always get the head cut for a seat insert. One cut-job and new seat will probably be around $25.

With the vast majority of 1010 gas heads I've done, no new seats were needed.

I appreciate the responses. This is such a good place to get help! However, there is a new twist. Some time ago somebody suggested that I pressurize the cylinder and listen for where the air comes out to determine if it is rings, intake valve or exhaust valve. I knew which cylinder showed 60 lbs. while all the others showed over 120 lbs, so I pulled the plug this morning to do the pressure test. Oops! EVERY cylinder is over 120. How can this be? It was hot when I did the compresson test before and it was cold this morning but other than that I can't figure out what the difference would be. I checked it multiple times on both occasions just to verify my results. Something is whacky!

Check the valve lash adjustment on the rocker arms.

Also carbon can build up and hold the valve open and then go away.
