1010 PTO noise

Have a loud popping/cracking sound coming from the lower part of the transmission area when the PTO is engaged. The sound stops when the PTO is disengaged. Doesn't seem to affect the PTO from turning. The PTO seems to be easier to engage than it did before. There is an adjustment to tighten the engagement, but I've never done this. Anyone have any ideas?

Is the noise a cracking sound or more of a tinging sound?
I had a similar noise from a chipped tooth on the cluster gear.
 
It's more of a loud cracking/popping noise than a tinging noise, like something breaking. It's been doing it for a while, but has gotten much worse lately.

What model is your 1010?
Do you have a dash shifter or the one on the tranny?

If the sound is coming from the rear of the transmission closer to the PTO, it might be a good idea to pull off the PTO and inspect, also might wanna pull off the rear transmission plate cover. Not too hard to do, just have to take the bolts off and inspect. Transmission fluid will have to be replaced.

If it's coming more from the area under the shifter, I would pull the shifter and have a look. If it sounds like something breaking it's probably a good idea to figure it out sooner than later. You'll have to drain and unbolt the hydraulic system in order to remove the shifter. Slide the hydraulic system back and pull up the shifter. YOu'll be able to see the PTO cluster gear as well as the engager.

I still think it's the cluster gear in some way.
