1010 timing dot

I m trying to line up the timing marks on the crankshaft and the camshaft. The crank I m putting in has rust pitting on the gear, and I can t tell where the punch mark is. Right now I have three different spots that look like a punch mark. One of those three marks lines up with the visible mark on the old crankshaft I am replacing, but I don t know if that gear is movable. Anyone have any tips on figuring this out? I m attaching a picture of the gear in the hopes y all can help. Sorry if they re bad it was hard to get a good image of the ticks. The three potential gears have red sharpie on them

Thanks.

DON'T even consider using that gear. You have another crankshaft or three, don't you?

Swap out the gear.

Even better, swap it out with the one that has previously "run" with the cam gear.

You can time cam and crankshaft by placing crank in engine so gears mate. Rotate crank until number one crank pin is at top dead center. Then rock crank back and forth a little. You want the cam timed so lifters teater as crank goes off dead center either way. You can start with your best guess using the timing marks. Then fine tune. Might take a time or two to get it right on. Hop this helps.

(quoted from post at 12:54:33 07/04/19) I am wondering how he will ever keep a front engine seal in it with the pits. Tom

With that gear, it won't run long enough before wiping out the gears for the seal leak to be a major problem

Right, thanks for the advice. I couldn t get the gear off so I took it to the local John Deere dealer who was kind enough to remove it free of charge. While there they also saw the putting on the seal and seconded y all concern, so I m gonna be taking it to a machine shop and seeing if they can do anything. Engine mechanic at Deere said they can grind it down, weld it back up, then grind back to spec.

It always seems to be something....

After thinking about this... does the front cover seal on this engine ride on the (rusty) crankshaft, or on part of the front pulley?

Better figure that out for sure before sending $$$ to have the "crank snout" restored.
