1020 hydraulic problem

Thats's what I had in mind for the loader I have using the scv's to eliminate the oil starvation issue. Never knew there was a kit when using a loader that could be added. No one ever mentioned such. There is a wealth of information here if the right questions are asked I guess. I will have the return oil from the scv's going to the filter when I get a chance. Sorry I hijacked this topic. Thanks for your help!

Checked the parts book and there is no mention of the boom cylinders being single acting . It appears that who ever installed the loader was a cheapskate and did not want to pay for a couple
Of hoses and fittings .
Converting the loader boom cylinders to double acting will reduce how much the oil level drops in the transmission when the loader is raised .
Down pressure on the loader is handy during some scrapping operation situations .

I agree double acting boom cylinders to allow for down pressure is handy at times and helps maintain the oil level during operation. However, I must disagree with you on the 37's boom/lift cylinders. Looking at PC982, I see AC14568 shown as the double acting bucket cylinder. AC14570 appears to be the boom/lift cylinder. It is the only choice shown and is single acting. All the plumbing drawings, I see, show single acting boom/lift cylinders. So, it looks like the cheapskate would be John Deere.

You didn't check in correct location in 37 parts catalog. I remembered installing 37 loader with single action boom cylinders & this parts schematic backed up my memory.

Deere soon introduced the ported filter cover as the SCV connections proved unsatisfactory .

May I ask what you think the correlation between single acting boom cyl on frt end loader has to do with introduction of ported filter cover?? That similar to the question ""which came 1st the chicken or the egg"".

IIRC ported filter cover on JD utility tractors appeared shortly after those tractors were introduced into production.

Oil from the single acting cylinder is being dumped into the transmission case . Not assisting flow to refill the oil cooler and reservoir if so equipped .
 

I totally agree return oil should be routed to ported filter cover on JD utility tractors of this era. I agree that presently with OP'S tractors hyd system that oil from boom cylinders is routed to reservoir when boom is lowered BUT no oil is being pumped out of reservoir when boom is lowered unlike on loader 2 way cylinders that pressure oil enters rod end of cylinder when boom is lowered.
 
I bought the L55982 cover and when I put
it on the gasket keeps blowing out from
under the filter cover. I tried twice.
I thought I might have pinched the gasket
the first time, so I bought another gasket
and made sure I was careful that it fit in
right. It worked ok a few times but then
the gasket blew out from under the cover.
Deere says the gaskets isn't any different
for this cover. I really dont want to pay
for the expensive cover but at this point
I guess I have to. Does anyone have any
different thoughts?
 
When you install filter cover gasket are you placing gasket up in trans housing held in place with grease? Is your tractors serial # below or above 045,199?

I didn't try the grease. I can try that.
I couldnt get it to stay with oil so I
just put it on the housing. I kept
checking with a flashlight to be sure it
wasn't getting caught and using a screw
driver to tuck it back in place as it
sealed. I spun the housing right before I
snugged it up to be sure it was seating
good too. You think I could have
tightened the filter cover too tight?
 

I'm not sure on overtightening stud holding filter cover. IIIRC the seal needs to be up in trans case to seal oil correctly.

Your tractor being below 045,199 has open center power steering & closed center 3pt, scv's or external hyd valves
 
I'm not familiar with all the hydraulic
terminology of open and closed center.
Is this in some way contributing to my
issue or were you just offering the
information? Either way I appreciate it,
I've got lots to learn about hydraulics.

I wish you a blessed Easter also. I offered the hyd info about your 1020 tractor due to the 2 different independent types(open & closed center)systems aren't normally located on same tractor. This info is very important when one needs to diagnose a hyd problem on your tractor.

Below is a brief explanation of differences in OC & CC hyd systems.

Open center hyd's oil flows continuously while engine is operating from pump to reservoir until a hyd control is activated to divert hyd oil. This diversion of hyd oil to operate a hyd component creates pressure.

Closed center hyd system builds pressure in frt hyd pump & associated lines. Pump then has oil diverted to inside pump crankcase which opens the stroke control valve & pushes pump pistons away from pump rotating shaft stopping pump from pumping. The pressure is maintained until a hyd function is activated or internal leak & pressure drops allowing springs to push pump pistons back against rotating pump shaft causing pump to begin pumping again.
 
Thanks for the info. I put the gasket in
with grease today. Made 100% sure it was
in properly. Secured filter housing
against the gasket and it still blew out
the gasket when the loader returned to the
ground. I attached a picture of how I
have it plumbed. I think it's too much
return pressure into the housing. The
local Deere dealer couldn't find anywhere
where the L55982 housing was listed for a
1020. I'm going to go ahead and purchase
the other more expensive housing tomorrow.
 

My JD parts researching experience tells me that the covers will interchange(see photo below)?

If your tractor was under my supervision I'd choose the cheaper ported filter cover.

Why not install an adjustable restrictor valve(2nd photo below) on FEL control valve return hose? I don't understand why lowering single acting one way boom cylinders is blowing filter cover seals.

Wonder what a pressure gauge would indicate ?
Is the return line from the hydraulic cooler/front tank back to the transmission restricted ?
