1020 Hydraulics

I have a 1020 that I have used for a few years. About a year ago it developed a slight noise and a vibration by my right foot. Earlier this year the hydraulics quit on me. The loader was very intermittent, the power steering as well and the 3 point did not operate at all. I was going on an extended trip so it sat for the summer. I had my son in law order a new hydraulic pump and just installed it this week with the help of a friend. I also cleaned the screen, new filter and fluid. I removed the spark plugs on the engine and am rolling it over with the starter to prime the pump but I don't seem to be getting pressure. Do I need to get it running or could there be another issue? My son in law works for a hydraulic shop but I don't know if anyone knows about this particular tractor as they work mainly on boom trucks and the such. Any help would be appreciated and as a side note, I have hernia surgery next week so it might be a while before I can tackle it.

Engine needs to be operating to attain 2250 psi pressure. What type hyd diagnostic procedures were performed to determiner that front hyd pump was faulty & required replacement? How long since hyd filter was changed & hyd oil suction screen checked/cleaned? Is your 1020 serial # below or above 045,200. If your 1020 was built for sales in N America then below that serial # has open center power steering & above that serial# has closed center power steering

Sounds like you are going to have a bit of downtime so acquiring the proper 1020 Service manual for your tractor should give the hydraulic shop/your son-in-law the diagnostic information to troubleshoot the system. With a bit of info there should not be an issue for a hydraulic shop to be able to help you if needed.

It looks like serial # is 038124T. assuming then it is closed. I did start it, the loader arms move, steering is getting better but no movement in 3pt. I had to shut it off as there is a leak in the radiator...ugh. Filter was changed, screen cleaned, and new fluid with the pump.

Your serial number of 038124 (that appears to be a 1966 serial number) is below serial number 045200, so your tractor should have open center steering, as Tx Jim posted.

I let it cool down and fired it up again. Loader arms are working well as is the steering. I still have no movement in the 3 pt. any ideas? I admit that I don't have much experience with tractors but am mechanically inclined.

I agree if built for sales in N America this 1020 has open-center power steering. IMHO the first thing you need to do is check hyd stand-by pressure. One can purchase a hyd gauge for under $20. If hyd pressure is below 1700 psi pressure control valve inside red box in photo below bolted to RH side of trans case behind hyd filter could be blocking hyd pressure to 3pt control valve & scv.

Any pictures of where this gauge would go to check pressure? There is also a lever on the side of the trans under the seat with a "D", "LD", and "L". what is that for?

Also a selector valve? with a forward, neutral, and rear. Is that for the remote rear hydraulic? The loader arms only work in neutral.

Like I said, I am mechanically inclined but at 64yo is my first tractor so sorry for any "dumb" questions.

You need to at least get an Operator's manual so as to properly understand the controls and how to use them. Here is a way to get one free from John Deere.

Click on the Equipment Publications tab.

When that page opens enter 1020 in the box beside Model # and search. You should get a dropdown list of equipment with 1020 in the model #.

Click on 1020 in the dropdown list, that should open another list of just 1020 items. Look down the list to Tractors - Base Units.

It looks like you will want the last one in the list from what I see doing this search. It has the manuals that cover your serial number range.

When it opens the list of manuals you should see Operator's Manual (OMT26335) and to the right of that it should show the Download icon. Click on Download icon and it will download a free copy of the Operator's Manual to your computer/device that you can save and print from as you wish.. If you want a book or CD of the Operator's Manual, the prices for those are shown below that, they are not free.

The service and parts manuals are available there as well, but those are purchase only items. You may find original used copies of the Service manual (SM2071) on eBay. Reprints are available from this site and may other places. A good used copy is often better than some reprints. Be aware online downloads may be incomplete.

One can check pressure on front hyd pump. Due to your tractors serial # one can not check pressure on power steering supply line!!! L/D control lever should remain in "D" for all tasks except when utilizing ground engaging implements such as 3-pt plows. That lever controls auto depth sensing when utilizing a plow. What type hyd valve controls frt end loader(SCV or ind) If ind type valve I wonder if valve is designed for closed center hyd system?
