1020 Injector Pump Conversion

Hi everyone. I came here to find out what my parts options are for converting the injector pump on my 1020. I'm about to rebuild the engine, and it has the RoosaMaster CDC type pump. As you all know, these pumps are hard to get parts for and difficult to rebuild. I've always been told they can be converted to the DB or JDB type pump, and that JD made a kit for that, but it is no longer available. I've seen a lot of old posts on here discussing this, but nothing recent. I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction in figuring out everything I need. Thanks

I've never seen the IP's substituted but I'll bet the IP drive gear would be no fun to change with engine installed in tractor. I think I'd look for a "donor tractor" with all the required fuel system parts.

Thanks. According to old posts I found on here, 1020 production started using the DB pump, then changed to the CDC and CBC pumps, and when they were discontinued by Stanadyne/RM, Deere went to the JDB until end of production. When parts for the CDC/CBC pumps were no longer available, Deere made a conversion kit for tractors that came with the CDC/CBC pumps, which included a special driveshaft that would allow mating the DB or JDB (not sure if just one of those, or both) to the existing timing gear, plus a mounting plate adaptor, and new fuel lines, etc. The kit was available in the 80s, but was apparently discontinued by Deere around 2008 as best I can tell.

Since I'm pulling the engine for overhaul, it doesn't matter to me if I could get the conversion kit, or find all the parts from a factory-installed system as you suggested, but I'm not sure EXACTLY what I need in either case (down to the exact Part #s). In the old posts on here, a member named jdemaris (who now goes by JDEM I "think") provided all the information I just repeated. He seemed to know the whole story on this conversion. I attempted to contact him by PM but I get a message that says PMs are disabled(?). If anyone knows how to contact him and would be kind enough to ask him if he would be willing to respond to this thread I'd really appreciate it. But I know there's got to be some others of you out there who have dealt with this, so please jump in if you would.
Thanks!

Check with salvage yards. Since you are tearing the engine down anyway,
having to change gears won't be an issue.
Earlier tractors will not have electric shutoff but the later ones will.

(quoted from post at 11:37:52 11/07/19) The JDB pump housing uses a larger pilot to match the C series pumps. DO NOT use a DB pump as it uses a smaller pilot, even though it will bolt on.
Can you tell me more? I didn t think either a DB nor JDB would bolt to my existing front cover without an adapter plate? If I were to convert without the "kit" and just switched out parts, I m currently under the impression I d have to change out the front plate/cover to mount either a DB or JDB?
Thanks

There should be extra mounting holes in your plate.
They are plugged with allen screws. There are enough
holes to fit the Roosa Masters and CAV pumps.

I just found that out today. So, If I have the proper timing gear for the JDB pump, plus the pump itself, and the fuel lines that are made for the JDB pump, I should have everything I need to convert from the CDC pump during the overhaul?

I'm a bit confused by previous discussions here that mention a "horseshoe-shaped clamp" or plate, in the Deere conversion kit to convert from CDC to JDB without tearing the engine down. As I read it, the clamp/plate was necessary to mount the JDB to the engine plate, so it's a bit hard to follow.

IF you strike out at all turns.. I have an azz-load of CBC & CDC parts..
I understand the frustration of finding a conversion kit..AND wanting to update the fuel system..
Are u sure u have the correct P# for the kit.??
Let me know if u need any parts to get YOUR PUMP running again.. TPG

Never saw or heard of a "horseshoe-shaped clamp" or plate. The pump mounts where the old one comes off.
Just reposition the mounting bolts.
Original kit probably contained different throttle linkage also.

Now you've seen a parts photo but photo is from 1520 PC.

I don't have a Part No for the kit at all, I'm not even trying to go the conversion "kit" route if I don't have to, I'm replacing the timing gear in the engine since I'm going to be overhauling it anyway. So, the plan is to replace the timing gear to one for the JDB, change the CDC pump to JDB, and replace all the lines. I have located the gear and all the lines. I'm just trying to figure out if what I just described will actually WORK, or if I'm missing something? The clamp that TX Jim has pictured is causing me some confusion, trying to figure out if it is necessary or not?

My CDC is stil working, but since I'm overhauling the engine, now is the time to replace it if I'm ever going to. You're the only person I've seen that has those parts. Is there a way to contact you other than through this thread? The PM function on this forum is disabled for some reason.

Do you know if that clamp is required to mount a JDB to my engine? This confuses me. I can only find one Part No. for the front engine plate (diesel) regardless of serial no., so they should all be the same. The clamp you show is not shown in the diagrams for the serial no.s that came with the JDB pump from the factory, so I can't figure out when/where it is needed, and when not. I'm overhauling the engine, so I can remove and replace studs as necessary to match mounting flange.

Where is that diagram from? Is it for the Conversion Kit? I've not seen it before on the online Parts Catalog. I'd like to see the whole thing if that's what it is.
Thanks for posting that.

As I previously stated the parts photo I posted came from 1520 parts catalog. After performing a "where used search" on JD parts site it appears that that part was utilized on 50 different engine applications. I remember that adapter plate from back when I was employed by JD dealer BUT I don't understand or remember why it was required.

Ah, I see. Thanks. I read on old posts from jdemaris where he said that clamp was part of the conversion kit for the 1020 as well, but I''m not really doing the "kit" route, where you mate the JDB with an adapter shaft to the existing timing gear for the CDC in the engine. Instead, I'm wanting to change the gear itself since I'm tearing the engine down anyway, and just use all the standard (not "conversion" parts for the later production serial no.s. There is no clamp shown in the diagrams for the later serial no.s that use the JDB from the factory. It would appear that should work, I'm just trying to confirm. Thanks again for your help.

OK that clamp is the same thing used on 4020 swap.
It's for tractors that only have one set of holes for mounting bolts.
We made clamps from angle irons (4020) before Deere came with kits.

Does your front plate have the extra holes I mentioned?
If so you don't need that clamp. Just switch the mounting bolts.
Which shaft/gear you use has no bearing on pump mount.
If your plate has only one set of holes, you can cut angle iron
clamps to hold the pump on.
We were switching those pumps before Deere was. That's how we did it.

I don't see any other holes in the plate, but the CDC pump is still mounted (and running). There might be some others under the pump flange that I can't see yet. I hope to start the teardown Thursday. There is only one part number for the front plate that I have seen across all the serial no.s, so I'm hopeful that there are other holes there. Your info about the homemade clamps is valuable in case I end up needing it. I may hit you up for more details if so. Thanks so much!

Well, I'm updating to show the (expensive) route I chose to go. I'm doing a complete overhaul, so I bought a new JDB pump to replace the CDC. I found a salvage drive gear (40.00) for the new pump to replace the one for the CDC. I also found a salvage replacement front engine plate from a construction equipment engine (100.00) which had the correct mounting studs for the new JDB pump. You can see the Construction Yellow paint around the edge of the replacement plate just in front of the new injector pump. As of now, the engine overhaul is complete, the pump/gear/plate replacements are done and everything is timed. All applicable timing marks line up and agree. I also have a complete new set of fuel lines ready to install to fit the new pump. Getting close...
