1020 John Deere

Hello,

I am having a few issues with my 1020 John Deere. The first one is it starts with the ignition switch occasionally. Initially I thought it was the starter so I pulled it out and had it checked out and everything was good. Next I thought it was the ignition switch, but did a continuity check on it and it seems good as well. I even put it in the freezer overnight and then tried it and it still seemed to be functioning correctly. Now I am at a loss. Anyone have any thought/suggestions?? If I run a jumper wire on the starter, I now not recommended, I can get it to start.

Second issue. Once I do get it to run randomly when I am using it, it will start "choking" bad and sounds like it is about ready to shut off. I pulled the air intake hose off the front of the carburetor and gas started running out. The fuel shutoff was replaced a couple of years back. The tractor has a fuel shutoff in the feed line from the tank and it leaked and drained the tank completely. Not sure if this factors into anything or not. Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions on this??

Last item. When the tractor is in gear and the clutch is all the way out I hear a knocking noise occasionally. I tried to grease the throw out bearing but it doesn't seem to want to take any grease. Anyone run into this before?

Sorry if I should have broken this up into multiple messages.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations/suggestions

I put the ignition switch in the freezer to see if the contacts were bad and when they get cold and "shrink" they now longer connect.

I will suspect that neutral start switch isn't making good connections. NS switch is located under cowling that the 2 gearshift levers protrude through. Sometimes one can remove a sealing washer or two reinstall switch and it will operate better. On carb it sounds as if needle/seat or float isn't functioning properly

You were correct on the neutral safety
switch. I ran a jumper wire and bumped the
key and the engine cranked. Although I
think the switch is completely bad. I took
it out and removed a shim and reinstalled
it and then took a multimeter and had
continuity no matter where the gear lever
was. I put the shim back in and the same
result. I pulled the carburetor apart and
need to get a rebuild kit. Is there
anywhere to get information on setting it
up once rebuilt?

Anyone have any further thoughts on the
clutch?
