1020 Mower Size

Well I decided to bite the bullet and buy a 1020 tractor recently. It's in decent shape, has some leaks nothing that I cant fix in due time, but great paint and tin. Now I am in search of a brush hog mower. What size mower will this tractor run? Will it run a 6 footer well, or do I need to stick with a 5 footer?

Thanks

IMHO a 1020 would handle a 6' cutter just fine. If too much in certain conditions, just take a smaller bite. Having said that, I bought a 5'er because I couldn't find a 6'er that didn't have the holy snot beat out of it, at a decent price.

Looks like it has one hooked to it ?
It also all depends on how tall and heavy of stuff you want to mow down.

Should handle a 6 footer with no problem. Be sure what ever you do is to have a brush hog with a shear bolt or a working slip clutch since a weak point is the PTO coupler and it is the pits to replace. BTDT on one of them a few years ago

I went from a 5' one that "perished" to a 6' both on the 3 point 800 hitch of a 70. Needless to say, it has plenty of grunt but I ran into an aggravation/problem. The 5' was a brand name Bushog and the 6' is a King Cutter. The rub (pun intended) is that if I fully lift the 6', the front edge of the deck hits the rear tires. Generally it's not a problem, but if I get in a corner I would usually throw the power trol full forward while wrasseling the no-power-steering beast into a sharp turn-I can't. Thinking ahead solves the problem generally. However, I recently did it anyway and took a few little divots out of my rear tread. Running over a skunk with a rotary mower can have a bad influence on the rest of your day and probably a few more.

Horsepower wise it should work O-K on a 6 ft Bush hog. Gas tractor was Nebraska rated 38 hp, I pulled a 6 ft Brillion cutter over over 1000's of acres with a 33 hp Farmall Super H. But the 1020 is fairly short, think it will need some weight up front to steer properly. TractorData says it has continuous, live, or independant PTO and either 540 or 540/1000 rpm.

I wouldn't shop for too heavy a cutter, or one that hooks too far back.

The seller had one hooked up to it so I could test drive it. It didn't come with the sell nor did I want it, was junk and beat to hell. So I'm in the market for one. Was thinking i'd buy the 6' County Line one from Tractor Supply, but will do some lookin around for a decent used one first. Just wanted to make sure a 6' would work properly with the tractor first. Anyone have any gripes with the CountyLine shredders? I've used a 5' one on an 8n and worked good, decent construction. Figured if a 23HP could run the 5', then a 38HP should be able to run a 6' no problem.

I've used a 6' behind my 38hp 530 2cyl
and it works fine. Front end gets a bit
light if you lift it fast, but 2cyls had
all their weight in the back anyways.

Nice 1020. We have a 1020 gas with a bit taller rear tires on it. It will run a 6 foot cutter but on hills in thick brush, it works the tractor. Like others have said, take a smaller bite at a time and it can do it. If you mow often or have flat ground it should not be an issue if the tractor is in good shape power wise.
